My life is full of wonder and incredible moments and this is definitely one of them. God always gives me what I need! To share space with her, to hear her stories, to feel her heartbreaks, disappointments and humiliations, to absorb her artistry, honesty and joys, to get to hold and love on her this past weekend… all beautiful surprises!! Miss Alison Mills Newman was the 17 year old actress who played the babysitter of Diahann Carroll’s character on the 1968 series “Julia.” I was casted to star opposite this incredible soul in an amazing independent project written and directed by the incredibly talented @bydave_fortune. I will forever be grateful for this experience mostly because of Her! More on the project later! 😉 Just when life seems stagnant, uninspiring and draining God reminds me of His LIGHT and Purpose - in others and within myself. And a lil flex - Miss Alison held my face and told me “Terri, your talent reminds me so much of Katherine Hepburn” WHAT?!! ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES! ♥️ IG fam you already know… Never stop Believing. Never stop Knowing. Never stop Going! Thank you David for choosing me and facilitating this union. Thank you Miss Alison for Seeing me before we ever met. For wanting to share the screen with me before we ever met. And for Loving me before we ever met! Now we go together!! 🤪 Her book FRANCISCO is a novel about her journey and her soulmate, that reads like poetry. I’m digging into her book and taking the journey through her words on this glorious Saturday!
I Love You Miss Alison!!

I keep returning to a line from Francisco, Madame @alisonmnewman ‘s quietly revolutionary novel: “i don’t know i think it’s not so much behind every great man is a great woman. as much as a great man is a great man and a girl is a girl.” (Alison Mills Newman)

There’s something profoundly freeing in that—in the way Newman strips the sentence of hierarchy, of capitalization, of grandeur. It feels like an act of liberation in itself.

Thirty years ago—or more—when I first read those words (I had borrowed the book from the public library, its cover barely clinging to the spine), something shifted inside me: a quiet recognition. How many times had I measured my worth by what or whom I stood beside, rather than by simply being?

I think I understood the sentence instinctively long before I understood why. My late father, the greatest influence of my life, was an extraordinary man. He left this world far too soon, at just forty-six years old. Yet the love he gave me has outlived him. It sustains me still. He never taught me that my value depended on proximity to someone else’s greatness. He loved me as though my existence alone was enough.

What a remarkable gift that is to give a daughter.
Perhaps that is why Newman’s words have never left me. They remind me that before I could become a woman, a mother, an artist, or a writer, I was simply a girl—and that was already worthy of love.

I may not have realized it then, but I see it now: Newman’s words reminded me that love does not require proof, and that freedom begins with self-recognition. Some of us spend a lifetime trying to recover that truth. I was fortunate that my father planted it in me before he was gone.

Alison Mills Newman shares, “When we stepped onto that set in 1968, we weren’t just making a sitcom; we were stepping into a revolution of the airwaves. Before JULIA, seeing a Black woman in a leading role that wasn’t a stereotype was nearly impossible.
.
Look at our faces! It’s 1968, and we are right in the middle of a whirlwind of change. This was a photo shoot where Marc—my incredible little co-star—and I were pretending to be on the phone with the one and only Diahann Carroll who was the lead in the ground breaking tv series JULIA.
.
Being on that set was more than just a job; it was a revolution. At a time when the world needed to see it most, America was given the gift of a beautiful, intelligent, and caring Black woman as a lead. For us two young actors, it was a front-row seat to African American history in the making.
.
At just 6 years old, Marc (the world knew him as Corey Baker) was cast as Julia’s son.
.
The Dynamic: I was the teenage babysitter (Carol Deering) always there to look after him while Julia was busy being a trailblazer.
.
A Total Pro: Marc was absolutely on top of his game! He always knew his lines—no flubbing or second-guessing for him. He was a natural.
.
The Magic of Diahann Carroll
Diahann was the heart of it all. She treated us with such kindness and grace, ensuring the set was always a fun, happy, and safe place for us to grow and learn. She wasn’t just a star; she was a pioneer who made sure we felt protected while we made history together.
.
A Legacy of Joy
A dear friend of mine even named his son after Corey Baker! He told me that seeing a smart, cute, brown-skinned kid like him on TV brought him so much happiness growing up.
.
The impact of JULIA reached far beyond the studio walls.”

Today, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to Alison Mills Newman for gracing our live feed with her presence and her extraordinary spirit.

Madame Newman did far more than join a conversation — she offered us an inheritance of lived truth. Her words carried the authority of experience refined by endurance, reflection, and grace. She reminded us that wisdom is not ornamental; it is forged. It is shaped in the quiet crucible of resilience and carried forward as light for others.

In honoring her message that love conquers all, we are called to remember that this truth stands within a powerful lineage. It echoes the indomitable legacy of Elizabeth Keckley — a woman who rose from the brutality of enslavement to become a trusted confidante to Mary Todd Lincoln and an architect of her own freedom. Keckley’s life was itself a testimony that love — for dignity, for community, for justice — can outlast oppression. Through her skill, intellect, and moral courage, she stitched together not only garments, but pathways to self-determination and collective uplift.

Just as Keckley transformed suffering into service, Madame Newman transforms experience into illumination. Both women, separated by centuries yet united in spirit, teach us that legacy is not built on comfort — it is built on conviction. It is built on the audacity to believe that compassion is stronger than cruelty, that truth is stronger than silence, and that love is the most enduring form of power.

Tonight, we stand in gratitude for a continuum of brilliance — for women who refuse to be defined by adversity and instead redefine the world through grace and courage. We are enriched by their testimony, steadied by their example, and charged to carry forward the timeless declaration they embody: that love is not merely an emotion, but a transformative force that conquers all.

As 2025 comes to a close, I find myself pausing, really pausing to take in all that this year has poured into my life.

This was the year I self-published my book under its new title, a labor of love that found its way into the world through intimate book readings and lectures at independent bookstores, libraries, college institutions, and a milestone I will never forget: my debut at Barnes & Noble. I am honored to have been an author featured by Malik Books at the LA Times Festival of Books—the largest book festival in the world. It was a moment that affirmed the power of staying the course and trusting my voice.

Also, to see my book placed on the shelves of a public library, available to strangers, seekers, and future readers—felt quietly monumental. It is also the year where I embarked on writing my second novel, now dedicated to a publishing imprint at Frederick Douglass Publishing.

And then, one of those moments that can only be described as divinely timed happened when the stars aligned. I met the legendary author Alison Mills Newman, whose book Francisco has long lived among my favorites. What began as reverence turned into recognition, conversation, and the early blossoming of a friendship I hold with deep gratitude. It was a reminder that the writers who shape us are not distant constellations, but living, breathing souls we sometimes get to meet along the way.

This year also gifted me an epic, unforgettable trip to New York City. Alongside an intimate gathering of my personal guests and children, I witnessed Superfine at The Met through a private tour led by the exhibit’s curator, Dr. Monica Miller herself, in the presence of members of the Costume Institute. It was an experience that deepened my reverence for craft, history, and Black expression. That journey was crowned by a hosted dinner in the home of Mrs. Loida Nicolas Lewis, surrounded by a handpicked circle of souls I hold close to my heart; an evening rich with beauty, conversation, laughter, and communion. This is for all my girlies who read! I know you can feel me on this one. When your entire 2025 reading season was slow and you wish it was so much more…

Between writing and life, I didn’t get through nearly as many books as I hoped. And yes, some of the ones I did finish were rereads because sometimes you just need the comfort of a familiar story.

I put together a little carousel of my 2025 reads and my 2026 TBR wishlist for my nerd girl crew out there.

Manifesting a fuller, richer reading year ahead. May 2026 be the year of new stories, cozy corners, and intentionally carving out time to read. Because aside from Jazz, what else is there anyway? LOL.
