The Catalyst
Santa Cruz, CA
w/ Creeper Lagoon, Time Spent Driving & Amory

A Thursday Showcase at The Catalyst with a twist! This one was headlined by Creeper Lagoon who had, by this time, grown from San Francisco favorites into major label signees. We had been fans since their first EP with this classic lineup, so we were definitely excited for this one. Jesse @jesselocks pulled a rabbit out of the hat to make it all happen 🪄 Also, Dan’s birthday 🧐

Dan Elkan, Nevada City, California, 2009. I was planning to write a long paragraph about what an exceptional musician & superb human being @danskateland is but it would probably not have been appreciated by the man himself. A truly humble dude. These photographs were taken in his backyard with an appearance from the dreadful Baby C in the last shot. Love you D! #nevadacity #california #leicacm #35mm

Cesar Chavez Plaza
Sacramento, CA
w/ Jonah’s Onelinedrawing & Zoppi

In this era, Sacramento’s promoter/magazine-head-honcho extraordinaire, Jerry Perry @jalsypalsy was booking the free shows downtown on Friday afternoons during the summer. On one of these nights in July of 2000, we were honored to be invited down to share a bill that included a hero of ours, Jonah Matranga, who had sung for Sacramento local legends, Far. The modestly-sized Cesar Chavez Plaza feels wedged into the heart of downtown, completely surrounded by the tallest buildings Sacramento has to offer. We didn’t perform outdoors too many times, but this specific setting felt particularly different— humbling at the base of the urban construction and peaceful against the more chaotic backdrop of the city.

Note, Alison in action with her manual camera and sporting an impressive, limited-run (limited as in, “This existed?”) t-shirt.

The National Hotel, Nevada City, May 2006. I have to admit that over the last few weeks it has felt harder & harder to post upbeat photographs of the USA. I don’t know how long I’ll keep going with this account but I think we all need to focus on positive things right now. These photos aren’t high art but they are a snapshot of another era and a wonderful moment in many of our lives. Those happy times when Al Ferrante, barman of the Nash would welcome us in with open arms to play music and party. Even though Fox News was playing on the tv there was a love & tolerance from Al, Tom & Ernie for all the alternative crowd. All three of them have sadly now gone but those memories live on. Cheers to you all and thanks for the very best of times. 🫶#nashbar #thenationalhotel #nevadacity #california #usa #contaxt2 #kodak #35mm #film #betterdays

Grass Valley, October 2007. This old car belonged to @alisonschmidty’s step dad Ray. It was one of the many classics gathering dust, pine needles & black widows on the property Alison had lived with her mom Denise & Ray. Somewhere in my archive I have a roll of 35mm film of the amazing life sized street Ray had built in the woods, complete with its own vintage gas station & auto repair shop. Truly Nevada County eccentricity at its very best. #grassvalley #california #leicacm #35mm #kodak

Dan & Alison, South Pine Cafe, Grass Valley, Fall, 2007. Going out for breakfast is a really big deal in NC & GV. Over two decades I think could have probably saved enough for a house deposit with all the money I spent on going out for food. I don’t have my own home but I am grateful for the best memories hanging out with my friends in SPGV, SPNC & Ike’s Quarter Cafe. #southpine #grassvalley #california #leicacm #35mm #film

September 2nd, 1999
University Of The Pacific, Stockton, CA

A setlist is born. Here’s a “nooner”, as they were known, at UOP Stockton. Playing at noon on college campuses while students and faculty were busily shuffling by was certainly unglamorous. Even so, it was always surprising how many people took a minute out of their day to hang out, watch the band play, and engage in some way with us afterward. By this point, our friend Jesse had graciously taken on the role of our booking agent. Here she is on the last slide pictured with Alison. Both of these women were (and are, to this day) BADASSES. They helped us out immensely back then and their support still means the world to us all these years later. Most of the photo evidence we are sharing here exists because of these two. A heartfelt thank you to both of them ❤️

Stevenson Rec Room, UCSC, Santa Cruz, CA
w/ The Suffering & Static Drive

We returned to the Stevenson Rec Room at UC Santa Cruz in November 1999, albeit with far less hair, all around. Plenty of cameras in the house for this one. Note Dan’s capture of Alison Schmidt with the tripod and Alison’s close-up of friendly favorite Jeff Thorsby on the ground, doing it all for the shot. All the bases were covered. Including an eerily spot-on flyer by @jesselocks 🔮

December 11th, 1999
The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA
w/ Jonathan Richman

On this day 25 years ago, we had the humbling opportunity to play at a notorious venue with a bonafide legend (and one-time Nevada County resident), Jonathan Richman! An odd pairing for sure, but when asked, Jonathan divulged that he actually preferred to have an opening act that was nothing like his show. We definitely delivered on that (likely to the confusion of his unsuspecting fans). It was exciting to see our name on a marquee at The Catalyst, a legitimate club, whose stage had once hosted most, if not all, of our favorite bands and artists at one time or another. Several of our friends took the opportunity to descend upon Santa Cruz with us, joining our friends who attended school there, to bear witness, get in some bowling and grab a quick Mike’s Mess at Zachary’s. These were good times.
