pathways | reflection Saturday October 24 at 7:30pm | Ganz Hall at Roosevelt University On the program: Above the fray by composer Nina Shekhar! From the Composer: From today’s orchestras to the Titanic, classical musicians respond to catastrophe in the most peculiar way – play some Bach tunes. As intensely, beautifully, devotedly, and ignorantly as possible. Because Bach must be our universal healer, our vaccine, our band-aid, our paycheck. Above the Fray pokes fun at this phenomenon by warping and distorting Bach’s famous “Prelude” from Cello Suite no. 1, unraveling its passages into threads that transform, detune, and degrade at different rates for different performers over the course of the piece. Unlike Western art tradition which believes that classical music is a one-size-fits-all solution, this piece dares to ask what if we all are not the same? What if we each have infinitely unique identities that morph differently under different circumstances? What if our responses to a piece of art wildly differ from each other and change over the course of our lives? And what if art itself is not a static monolith, but rather something dynamic that we allow to breathe, reshape, decompose, and reincarnate into new lifeforms over time? The 2026-2027 Season is sponsored by the Katherine L. Griem and Anthony G. Montag Charitable Fund in memory of Anthony Montag. Thank you to our Woodwind Section Sponsors:

Yielding is a four-channel sound installation exploring home, family, memory, and musical inheritance. It was commissioned for ROOM NOISE, the closing event for Chicago-based artist/composer Alissa Voth’s @alissavoth exhibition My First House Was Red. My grandfather, Clinton E. Riggs, invented the Yield Sign in Tulsa in 1950–51. My grandmother, his daughter, taught me accordion and deeply shaped my understanding of making, listening, and music. I was fortunate to know my grandfather and spend time in the house that held so much of his life. My grandmother encouraged the curiosity and persistence that eventually led me to build my own studio and pursue composition. The four channels move from her living voice, through the physical instrument and sounds of the house, toward distant sounds of memory. THE TEACHER — My grandmother’s old voicemail recordings. Her voice carries the memory of being taught, encouraged, and given the confidence to keep making. THE INSTRUMENT — Close sounds of the accordion: buttons, keys, bellows, breath, movement, and fragments of chords. The focus is on the physical relationship between player and instrument. THE HOUSE — Field recordings connected to my family’s history, including several of my grandfather’s metronomes playing together, overlapping and drifting in and out of time. The house becomes an instrument of its own. THE MEMORY — My grandfather’s 78 rpm records processed, looped, and passed through tape, becoming removed from their original form. Less a reproduction than an impression of remembering them—distant, imperfect, fragmented, and still present. ROOM NOISE brought together quadraphonic works by ten composers at Yes Project Space in Chicago, inviting visitors to move through the gallery and experience each work from different positions. Composers: Bahar Royaee, Iván Naranjo, Ana Luisa Díaz de Cossío, Alissa Voth, María Lihuen Sirvent, Orson Abram, Treya Nash, Mark Kuykendall, Carlos Zárate, David Alan Broome. — Mark Kuykendall Artwork by Clinton E. Join @alissavoth at @yesprojectspace for her Closing Event, ‘My First House Was Red,’ on October 2nd, 6:00-9:00pm. Alissa Voth is a Chicago-based paper artist and composer of contemporary classical music. Alissa’s solo exhibition weaves photographs of colorful Victorian houses with landscape photography, both drawn from printed media from the 1990s. These woven images represent the fading memory of the first house we may have lived in, the physical boundary of our earliest understanding of reality, and the container for the archetype of “home.” It is a structure we can never leave: even if we forget its shape, we can always feel its edges.
