#assembly | Meet the artists taking over our space 💥

Each year, the eight members of The Assembly commission young artists based in the #uae to present new artworks and facilitate public programmes.

Pointing at digital and physical landscapes, the city as a stage for emotion, industrial life, material histories, physical labor and rituals through this year's theme 'composite,' these artists are about to physically takeover the Jameel through multiple audiovisual and artwork interventions around the stairs, passageways and gallery spaces 9 and 10.

The 2023 Takeover commissions are presented in conjunction with artwork loans from the Art Jameel Collection, which was a main component of the Assembly’s in-house research process, informing the direction of the exhibition and its themes. Artists featured from the collection include: @ali.cherri, @dohosuhstudio, @mohammadalfaraj, #rayyanetabet, @s_e_h_e_r_s, @shilpaguptastudio and @odysseus.ad.

The Youth Takeover 2023 is also complemented by a rich public programme comprising workshops, talks, performances, walks, a panel discussion and Assembly-guided tours.

Mark your calendars for ‘composite,' which kicks off this Friday May 5 and runs until May 28.
Free and open for all. Head to the link in bio to RSVP.

The Youth Takeover returns to @jameelartscentre with 'composite' a group exhibition co-curated this year by Assembly cohort.

📅 5th -28th May 2023
Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai

Marking the culmination of a year-long talent development programme, the Youth Takeover presents 'composite', an exhibition that asks "what makes us?" featuring new commissions by young artists based in the UAE and works from the Art Jameel Collection @art_jameel, which was a main component of the research process, informing the direction of the exhibition and its themes.

The eight original commissions have found strong conceptual connections to Tarek Al-Ghoussein’s practice as a whole, specifically K Files 934 from the Art Jameel Collection, as it dialogues with their own study of bodily presence/absence and the passage of time in space. The work has been an important part of the conversations surrounding the thematic core of the Takeover.

This year’s learning programme was designed, curated and facilitated by Youth Assembly alumna @shamanair.

For ROADBOOK’s ongoing #FocalPoint photo series, Ali Khaleel’s (@alitkhaleel) photography captures street scene subjects encountered in the #Deira neighbourhood, one of the oldest parts of #Dubai. His photos offer a poetic glimpse of daily life, and have a timeless, character-focused quality.

“In Dubai, I try to photograph people and places that remind me of my time growing up here. That way, I implement my own personal touch to painting a social landscape of the city.”
