For the love of art

There’s something about handmade. The thought, the time, the effort. It forces us to be present. It goes against everything the world tells us to obsess over. Optimising our days, day jobs, and side hustles.

That’s why we want to champion artists. They’re the experts in presence. They’re happy to let five hours pass without a thought for “wasted time.” That’s the energy LA SALA is built on. Because time spent with yourself and the people you love is never a loss. Especially in the living room.

Our first installment is by our founder, @aliyah0.o

If you were to ask her when she started getting into art and she’ll look at you confused. It was not something she had to discover, she had been obsessed with it ever since she first picked up a pencil. Watercolour, pencil, acrylic - she’s self-taught across mediums, but oil paint has her heart.

For this piece, she merged images from our August event to put the energy of LA SALA on paper: the music, the dancing, the chatter, all encased in warm reds and yellows - the calming fire of a night of salsa with us.

We’re excited for the next. Class tickets are sold out but we still have a few tickets left for the social Link in bio to book.

Salsa Boricua 🇵🇷

What makes puerto rican salsa different? 🪘🔥

It starts with the clave🥢

The clave is the rhythmic heartbeat of afro-caribbean music, traditionally felt in a 3-2 or 2-3 pattern.

It gives the dancer a musical framework to connect their steps, body movement and partnerwork to the music.

And what about on2?
On2 refers to when the dancer breaks on beat 2. It is a timing, not the rhythm itself. The clave is the foundation, on2 is one way the dancer moves within that foundation.

Puerto rican salsa grew from puerto rico’s rich afro-caribbean musical heritage, with puerto rican musicians and communities playing a major role in the development and global spread of salsa.

Rhythm. Clave. Musicality. Connection.
That’s what makes salsa more than just steps 🎶🇵🇷
