Hey guys, first time tried my hands at marble patterns on clay.White and coloured clays were carefully mixed together and thrown on the wheel.A touch of gold further enhanced its beauty. All about the Raku workshop last Sunday. Conducted by @anubha.jaswal along with four other potter participants @crimsonkettle @inspiredbyclay @alkapotteryofficial and @potterbychance
The day was filled with four firings and non stop activity and excitement from morning 10 to evening 7.
We did naked Raku - horse hair (first image) and ferric chloride (along with some magic ingredients - one of my favourites so far)
And glazed Raku - to get some beautiful crackles and copper reduction.

We were covered from head to toe - partly to prevent ourselves from fire and heat, and partly because of the Covid requirements.
All the pots were taken out of the kiln at red hot temperature of about 850 deg C. Or was so intended...as we realized our thermocouple malfunctioned and the first firing had crossed 1150 degrees, resulting in cracking of pots due to thermal shock.
So for the next three firings we relied on Anubha's judgement and red colour inside the kiln to decide when to take out the pots and do the different treatments that we did.

Some pots I liked immediately, some grew on me with time. The more I see these pots now, the more I like each and every one of them.
For me, it was a lot of learning compressed in a day, meeting some lovely potters that I mostly meet during such exciting workshops and knowing some amazing new ones!

Raku Workshop diaries:
The second round of firing was an experimental firing with Ferric Chloride solution.. Ferric Chloride is highly corrosive and stains the skin, hence it was imperative we wear latex gloves while administering this treatment! Mixed with a bit of this and that.. put in the kiln... It's almost like barbeque.. the results were spectacular!!

Here are some of the pots that have undergone the horse-hair Raku treatment. 🐎

The process is lots of fun and doesn't require any glazing. The pots are taken out of the kiln with long handled tongs when the inside temperature of the kiln is about 850°C. In our case, it seemed that the temperature was taking too long to rise and then when we took the pieces out, we realised that perhaps the pots has been over-fired.
The first lot we took out, cracked due to the thermal stress! After that our initial attempts to place the horse-hair were failing as the horse-hair were burning coming close to the pots. Gradually, once the pots cooled a bit, the effect was visible. The black lines on the pots are where the horse-hair burner and left it's scars!
Eventually, we realised the pyrometer was a bit off in its reading!

The first workshop of 2021, was a Raku firing workshop!
With 5 participants, keeping Covid precautions in place, it's a guess who, with masks on!
Such an enthusiastic bunch of potters.
