Stretching the neck almost always feels good, but is it actually what you need?

Sometimes, yes. However, the neck needs to be strengthened more often than most people realize. It consists of many muscles (among other structures), and like any muscle group, it benefits from strengthening.

Strengthening the neck muscles can help to build resistance against aggressive motions such as head snaps, collar ties, and for fighters, punches. There has also been some recent evidence showing that neck strength can help to decrease concussion risk.

As well, after a neck injury, especially if there is nerve involvement, there is almost always the need to include muscular strength and endurance in the rehab process.

Although I show a few different strengthening options in the video, as always, we recommend to consult a physio near you before starting your own program.

If you live in Calgary, you can see us!

Eles aceitaram o convite. Subiram no nosso palco. E fizeram o primeiro BR.Summit acontecer 🙌🏻🙏🏻

Just wanted to take this time and finalize this grid with gratitude to Allan @allangbcalgary and organizing this amazing event! Such a wonderful experience to see some of my teammates compete, catch up with old friends and making some new ones along the way. I had a chance to meet with Gary from @strike_yyc extremely friendly and I always had a smile while we chatted in between rounds! I hope to meet him again soon at other events and learn more about the industry! 🫶

Lots of fun was had at our Labour Day open mat today, with students from the four quadrants of the city.

If you didn’t show up, you really missed it.

Luckily, open mat options are something we don’t lack at GB Calgary!

Thanks to everyone who came out for some fun.

See y’all tomorrow.

I gained some very valuable experience at JJCon this year. Ended up losing first rounds to close matches but that’s how it goes. No excuses, I had some good moments though and I was able to overcome some adversities.

Thank you everyone for supporting and watching, and coaching.

My coaches @allangbcalgary @duduhbjj

And thanks to @mikey_jj93 @jonahkammermayer and the whole @blackgold_jiujitsu for supporting/coaching and travelling together.

Thank you to my students @fraser_rawlyck and @aaron_nagtegaal for watching and being a part of this trip with me.

And everyone back home cheering me on! 🫡🙏

This past Saturday, August 29th, four of our youth athletes participated in the Roll X Super Fight event in Calgary.

Starting the evening in the first match was our fierce competitor, Eli “The Dragon” Morgan. Eli demonstrated a high level of skill and a tactical approach while performing amazing techniques. Constantly looking to finish in this sub-only format, The Dragon impressed the crowd. Eli didn’t get the outcome he wanted, but truly showed he is a warrior. We’re very proud of you, Eli “The Dragon”! Keep training, Champ!

Representing our dojo in the fourth match was Emerie “The Problem” Cook. Emerie’s energy was electric, and she showed improvements in her jiu-jitsu skills and game. Bringing the match to overtime, Emerie lost to a formidable opponent via takedown. It was a tight, back-and-forth battle where she displayed a fighter’s heart and true sportsmanship. We’re very proud of you, Emerie. Keep training and levelling up!

In the seventh match, Carter Lainof brought the heat, coming close to securing a couple of belly-down ankle locks. His scrappy opponent brought the match to overtime, where Carter dug deep and secured a two-point takedown for the victory. Congratulations, Carter! Super proud of you, big buddy! Keep training hard.

Battling in the co-main event was our two-time ADCC Youth and two-time Pan-American Kids Champion, Annalise “Pena” Gale. Taking on a blue belt in the adult division, she looked to demonstrate her high level of jiu-jitsu. Her opponent came out quickly with leg attacks, but Anna defended, earned the pass, took the back, trapped an arm, and worked a 2-on-1 control to secure the rear-naked choke for an impressive victory. Very proud of Anna’s professionalism and vicious display of skill!

Thank you to our DOBJJ family for coming out to support our athletes. I’m very grateful to have such a loyal and respectful team.

Thank you to Allan DeSousa and his team at Gracie Barra for hosting Roll X. Congratulations to all the athletes who stepped up to compete, those who earned victories, and all the teams representing our ever-growing sport and art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu here in Alberta. Commendable! Osss!
