You could look at the hard times in your life as a curse or as a blessing. When you choose the latter, you’ll make the best of every situation.

As I’ve said to many lately, over the last month I went up one gym with the opening of @gbnortheastcalgary and down about 50 hours of manpower with the departure of 3 coaches.

I had lots of decisions to make. I made the simplest one of them all: get back to where I belong: the mats. That’s how all of my gyms became successful. It wasn’t with me managing, working the front desk or doing our marketing. It was with me on the mats. So, one way or another, I will trust God’s plans and will keep doing what I always did best: teach.

Today was a difficult day for me. I lost someone I loved a lot. I’m not sure if I ever expressed it, but I’m sure he knew it. Being on the mats, especially with the kids, was the best medicine.

It’s time to get back to the roots. Some might say it’s a step back. Maybe I should’ve never taken the step forward, so I’m fine with that.

Long live BJJ.

Jesus is king and I am grateful for everything. The good, the bad, the ugly. Praise Jesus.

Over the past couple of months, I have really dreaded this day, but it has come. Professor @duduhbjj and Coach @marielle.honorio had their last rolls with us as they head back to Brazil tomorrow.

Over the past couple of months I’ve been a mix of sadness to see them go and extreme anger with what this country is doing to two of the most hardworking people I’ve ever met. I’ve avoided talking about it or even thinking about it because of that, but today was inevitable.

Dudu and Lely, you treated my school as if it were yours, you embraced our culture, our students and you became a huge part of @graciebarracalgary family.

Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for this amazing community.

Legacy is the impact we leave on people whose lives we touch. You have left a lifelong impact in all of us, so I choose gratitude as the feeling I want you to depart with.

We will miss having you on our day-to-day, we will miss rolling with you, and having your company at our get-togethers.

May God continue to bless your lives and may you continue to positively impact the lives of people you cross paths with.

I love you guys and will miss you deeply.

See you soon

10 years ago, you came to bring to life the biggest dream I had ever had: be a dad.

Seems like it was yesterday. I remember it like it was yesterday, how that little cry completely changed my life instantly.

I’m so far from being the father I thought I’d be and I aspire to be, but I try hard every day to be a little bit better for you.

Even with all my flaws and my mistakes, I hope you can feel how much I love you.

My promise to you, which is tattooed in my body, stands, as it always will: you’ll never walk alone. Even when you don’t need me anymore, I’ll always be with you.

Happy birthday

Lots of fun was had at our Labour Day open mat today, with students from the four quadrants of the city.

If you didn’t show up, you really missed it.

Luckily, open mat options are something we don’t lack at GB Calgary!

Thanks to everyone who came out for some fun.

See y’all tomorrow.

Being a Jiu-Jitsu coach is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. And I’ve done some difficult stuff.

If you really care about people, there’s no way this job won’t chew you up and make you rethink your life many times. We deal with all sorts of people, from neurodivergent kids to suicidal kids and adults. People who love you one day and want to see you in a ditch the next, for the stupidest reasons.

That’s why I love it when students make my day lighter, when they mess with me sending smart ass messages, when they say stuff that’ll get them choked during a roll lol…people that see beyond the “professor”, that look at me as just a friend they train with, a normal person…

Why do I keep doing it?

The ability this job gives me to change lives.

The mother whose autistic child had never been accepted at any other program, or had been kicked out…

The kid who was suicidal before he found the ability to defend himself against his bully…

The guy who beat his addiction…

I could keep going on and on with stories that would make the strongest of men cry, but I think you get the picture.

So, yes, this job drains the heck out of me, but it also fulfills me like nothing ever has.

Winning medals is cool. Creating champions of life, though…that’s the real flex for me…

38 today…

What a journey it’s been.

In one of the most physically and mentally challenging years of my life, the feeling I have is gratitude.

I thank God for everything I’ve learned, but most importantly, for the reassurance I’ve had of His love for me. Here’s one thing I’ve always known, but that has become much clearer for me this past year: no matter how unworthy I think I am, His arms are always open. I will always be unworthy, but that love leads me to at least try to be a bit better every day, not as an excuse to remain at the status quo.

Special shout out to my family: @brunabornancin , Miguel and Laura for going through good and bad times with me. You are my why.

Jesus is king

Coming back to training after surgery has definitely been one of the most challenging things I’ve been through in Jiu-Jitsu, as far as I can remember. Maybe second only to the pain I dealt with for years before finally having the surgery.

The soreness, the lack of strength, and all the extra weight from so much time away have made me slower and, many times, insecure about what I’m actually able to do.

But the healing of the mind has absolutely been the hardest part.

I’ve lost count of how many times I saw an opportunity to try something and didn’t, simply because I got scared. Unsure if I could pull it off without compromising my progress or hurting myself again.

I’ve also lost count of how many times I’ve gone for something and realized my timing was off by just a second. And in Jiu-Jitsu, one second is more than enough to put you in a bad position.

It’s been hard.

But in the end, I guess that’s part of what has always kept me in this sport.

I have the mind of an ever-learning apprentice. I’ve never really enjoyed being the best, the toughest, or the most prepared person in the room. I love being in positions where I get to learn, struggle and grow.

And this sport puts me in that room like nothing else.

Talent may open the door, but perseverance is what keeps you in the room.

I’ll always be in the room.

The video is just a few highlights from training yesterday. A reminder to myself that even when things aren’t going your way, you can still have good moments. You can still find little victories. You can still hit some of your favourite moves.

And despite the hard times, I still have so much fun doing this thing.

Keep ya head up.

É aprender a fazer diferente.

Eu me calei.

A minha força, minha resposta e a minha justiça vêm do Altíssimo.

Descansa no Senhor e espera nele.” by @allangbcalgary

Salve galera!
