With graduation less than 120 hours away, we continue recognizing the seniors who spent this past fall helping to lead the cross country team. This morning we highlight vice-captain Don DeRocha Jr.

Don joined the cross country team as a sophomore, encouraged by some of his classmates to give it a try. Over the next three years, while managing asthma, he showed just how far hard work can take you.

He debuted with a 21:40 at the 2023 Chesapeake Invitational and dipped under 21 minutes by the end of his sophomore year. His junior year was largely spent in the 20s but it ended with a highlight run of 19:01 at the October College Park parkrun that looked like the race of his life at the time.

Then he went and topped it. After working his way back under 20 minutes in his senior season, Don closed out his high school career with four straight sub-20 races, capped by a career best 18:20 in this past October’s parkrun.

Don will attend Montgomery College this fall with plans to transfer to the University of Maryland to study sports management and broadcasting.

Addressing younger athletes on the team, Don says, “It doesn’t matter what your background or experience is. You can make it here and achieve team and individual greatness. You just have to be willing to try.”

Congratulations, Don! Thank you for everything you brought to the cross country program, and since you’ll be just up the road, don’t be a stranger!

Thank you DeMatha Track. The teammates, friends, and coaches that I’ve grown with during these past 3 years made every moment worth it. Truly wouldn’t trade it for anything. #StopswimmingSmoot #madisonstreet
