Save the public libraries 📚

Original letterpress print by @alan_kitching_typography for Durning Library in Kennington London @lambeth_libraries

“It’s true that libraries make writers and readers; that they house, protect, and defend language. The library is that place where language sits, ready to be picked, poked, and prodded. Most writers affirm the central importance of the library in their childhood and wax lyrical about the private, transformational experiences with books that constituted their desire to write. The library, in our shared public imagination, is a special place. It is understood as the steward of an assortment of wonders, a place to explore curiosities, a place to get lost, to forget about the violence of social life. A beacon of stillness. We know the story of the famous writer’s relationship to the library but not the central role that libraries play in areas hardest hit by state neglect, organised abandonment, and decades of austerity.”

@bishopsgateinstitute Library, a hidden gem which I, like many others no doubt, have walked past countless times, unaware of it existence. The team told me they have not be able to open the library at all during the pandemic but that in April they will be welcoming the public back in at last. It specialises in radical history, labour history and London history. Additionally, it houses one of the biggest LGBTQ+ archives in the country some of which is being exhibited at the @barbicancentre this month.

A lot of these special and significant places are facing cuts and closure - 120 in the last decade alone. @allthelibraries have created a list of all the libraries in the city to support these threatened resources. Well worth checking out especially on World Book Day! Shot for @inigo.house

Save the Date
Attenborough Arts Centre
The World is a Work in Progress
Private View: 25 September, 6.00pm – 8.30pm

Attenborough Arts Centre (University of Leicester) announces, The World is a Work in Progress, an exhibition presenting the work of leading artists from across the UK – Bob & Robert Smith, Jessica Voorsanger, Michael Forbes, Ruth Beale, Kai Syng Tan, Khush Kali, Vince Laws - sharing their visions of the future to mark the centenary of the founding of the University of Leicester.

The World is a Work in Progress features newly commissioned works, co-produced projects, and several significant loans by artists whose work actively engages with the conditions of our time. It encompasses sculpture and protest banners spaces for thinking and dreaming as well as tactile tapestry,
The practices of the artists in the exhibition are connected by an interest in social and political activism, co-production, and concepts of futurity. They highlight the inequalities and prejudice that exist in our societies today, calling for action in the here and now. Other works explore a variety of possible futures and inviting collaboration in an imagined future.

If the world is a work in progress, what do we want to change? What might the next 100 years have in store? @bobandrobertasmith @jessicavoorsanger @allthelibraries @kaisyngtan @khushkali @vincelaws @sculptureinthecity @sculptors_on_sculpture @uniofleicester #nottingham
