Got a notification in my calendar yesterday to remind me that today is my son’s 18th birthday. That wasn’t necessary. Not least because it marks my own anniversary on the parenting journey A moment in time indelibly printed on my mind.

However, more importantly all year long the reminders of moving forward to this legal age of adulthood in the UK have been flowing uncontrollably into our existence. He started his final year of school, passed his driving test, received university offers, embarked on solo travel, got the razor out more frequently😀 amongst other things. It’s been a lot to process but I am pleased for him. He is ‘lifeing’ through the stages in his own way as it should be. All credit to the village as always.

I don’t know who decided that 18 was an appropriate age to be considered an adult. What I do know is that no matter what privileges the law affords young people at 18 the question for each parent is:

“Is MY child ready to fledge?”

Don’t let the law dictate the timing of your parenting. Let your child show you. I’m watching mine, processing and learning.

Happy 18th birthday Eli! May your blessings continue to flow and shine through you out into the world. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

📚Here are some highlights from our event, Encounters with James Baldwin: Celebrating 100 Years! featuring writers Ray Shell (@streetangelsbooks), Roy McFarlane, and Sea Sharp (@seathepoet) in conversation with co-editor Kadija Sesay.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended! ⭐️It was such an inspiring afternoon, and as reflected in this feedback from AGJ:

“[...] I enjoyed meeting the writers who contributed to the featured book. They were all so humble and down-to-earth. I came hoping for inspiration and left with a renewed commitment to reading James Baldwin’s work, along with my copy of the book.”

The searing pain of leaving one home of loved ones to travel to another home of loved ones has been a constant in my life for many years. Time has not dulled the pain. Yet gratitude is a must because the pain along with the tears of joy and sadness are a reminder that I love and am loved.
