POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Hi friends, here's a little clip of our version of Bonny Ship The Diamond from our set at Kraków Celtic Festival back in September.

Those who have seen me play will know how dear this song is to me, as I learnt it from the much missed Martin Boland, and maybe will also know that this arrangement is one I came up with on the spot a few years ago after being asked to sing it during a very quiet session, so it's a pretty unique version.

There was an extra special significance to this particular performance, because Michał is the reason I ended up going to Kraków for the first KCF last year. During a particularly dark time for me personally, he also recorded and posted himself singing this song and dedicated it to me.

This led to me asking him, rather impromptu, the day before, if he would join us during our set for this song, and he graciously agreed.

I am eternally grateful to him and the rest of my fantastic musical companions for helping to make this such a beautiful moment - I don't think I'd come close to imagining how it would feel, and I hope you enjoy watching/listening to this as much as I did playing it with these folks.

Musicians:
Violins: @allydouglasfiddle and Jake Sanwell
Piano: @alyross.w
Cello: @m.gorka04
Guitar & vocals: yours truly

With thanks to @ukapala for filming and sending me the video, here's an almost complete video of an incredible backstage jam at @krakowcelticfestival 2026!

What started off as myself, Ally, and Jake running through a few tunes as a warmup/rehearsal for our set quickly spread to involve not just the other musicians already in the room, but also more who came in and joined us as we were playing.

Featuring members of (at least) five of the acts playing at the festival, from a variety of different countries, with some who knew each other well, and others who had only met on the day, this to me is a perfect demonstration of the bond of community and friendship fostered by the Krakow Celtic Festival, and the power of tunes :D

I think you can see from our faces and body language just how much fun we were having, and the magic of the interplay between us - when Daniel and myself switch instruments and shortly afterwards trade places so him and Aly can really get some crunchy backing going, or when we spontaneously drop down to just melody on the very last time through the last tune.

This jam is what planted the idea in my mind to try and do something similar for the finale of the festival the next evening at the end of our set, of which more to come!

The Well is one of the many amazing albums eligible for a @sayaward this year! I am so proud to have a self-released album I produced and wrote eligible for a national album award. I love independent music, I love unsigned music and I love the village of people who came together to help me with the making and roll-out of this album. This is absolutely class ❤️
