When I was a freshman In high school I saw my first world class show, and ever since that moment, I’ve had a dream of becoming a world class performer. The excellence they achieved, the roar of the crowd, the hold their shows had on me, I wanted to be a part of that.

After a pandemic, a gap year, and hours of extensive practice, I am proud to say that I have accomplished my childhood dream :). Every time I was at a DSP rehearsal or a competition and felt any sort of doubt I always reminded myself of how far I’ve come and that little Derek would be so proud.

Thank you @darkskypercussion for helping me achieve my dream. Thank you to the staff for pushing me harder than I have ever been pushed. Thank you to my Mom and all the people that have supported me. Thank you to the members for creating an environment where I can be myself and a place where I can make memories of a lifetime. I wouldn’t have wanted to perform with any other people. We are all now part of the dark sky legacy and no matter where we go, we will always be together in the vast endless dark sky shining bright like the stars we are.

I love you all, and I miss you all already <3. Frisson will always hold a place in my heart.

Looking back on these past 7 months, it was my last time doing a lot of things. I viewed the activity from a vastly different perspective being in a new environment during my last season ever as a performer.

there are a lot of things to look at in the rear view mirror, and these words painted the road ahead as I stepped on the bus to the airport for the last time -

“That just means it’s going to be your first time doing something new, right?”

we’ll discover what that is, speeding through the signs and off the road.

As I reflect on this extraordinary season with Darksky Percussion, I am overwhelmed with profound gratitude. This journey has catalyzed remarkable personal growth and enhanced my dance skills to unprecedented levels. However, the conclusion of such a memorable season brings a certain melancholy.

Performing in the semi-finals was a particularly evocative moment. On that stage, my mind was entirely consumed by thoughts of my visual ensemble—our shared experiences. The memories we have forged—our collective efforts, the challenges we faced, the injuries we overcame, and the sheer joy reflected in your smiles, your dance moves, and your laughter—are permanently engraved in my heart, cherished for a lifetime.

Throughout this journey, I have been unwaveringly fearless—on the field, in life, and even humorously, in my perpetual tardiness. While it might seem straightforward to bid farewell and revert to my usual routines, the truth is far from simple. Your presence has been transformative in my life; it is because of you that joy has returned to my countenance, and it is you who have made me feel truly at home. This comfort has reached a point where my lateness has become a token of my ease among you.

For every moment we have shared, my gratitude is boundless. You will remain forever dear to me. Thank you all for everything. Affectionately, Rick.
