Growing up my dad used to take me to Borders books in Mt. Kisco every Saturday night. He’d let me order a hot chocolate and a vegan brownie at the downstairs cafe and then we’d spend an hour reading and perusing the books. Inevitably, I would always wind up in the cookbook section, or with a Nancy Drew, and each time we left the store, a small voice inside of me would whisper, one day, you’ll be here on the shelves.

So here I am, over two decades later, a 40 year old mom of three, and my book is in fact on the shelves. Last night at the 92nd Street Y someone asked how it feels to go for your dreams later in life. I said it feels like everything that has happened to me has materialized exactly when it was meant to, and the older I get the more I realize that there is no timeline, no clock, no roadmap except your own. Keep pushing, dreaming, working and believing, and one day, you’ll be on the shelves too.

Thank you to everyone who has been on this ride with me, many of whom are tagged in these pictures, and a special thanks to my ♥️ @mikey_ru for all the love and support and for being on kid duty for the next ten days so I can take this book baby on the road!

I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up. I majored in creative writing and literature, my first job after college was teaching snowboarding for Aspen Ski Co and I have a masters in International Affairs. I never had a straight path, or a resume, just a desire to be my own boss, connect with people and do something that I was wildly and unapologetically passionate about. And I really, really, really wanted to be on national TV. A decade after starting my “career” that happened when I showed the world how to make two beautiful, healthy, vegetarian dishes on @todayshow this morning. When I was growing up we lived on Mercer street in the building above what is now @springcafeaspen NYC location. Every night I used to sit at our small marble kitchen table with a black banquette cushion and look outside the window at the Empire State Building and the neighbors’ windows bustling with life inside, and wonder how my life would turn out. Today, when I woke up at 6am to get ready for my childhood dream to come true, I looked out my window at the near-same view, just a few blocks from where I grew up and smiled. I couldn’t have known it then, as Steve Jobs brilliantly said, the dots only connect looking backwards. But with time, trust and hard work they do connect, in ways better than you could have imagined. You don’t have to know how yet, and believe me, you wouldn’t want to.
