Yesterday was an incredible reminder to myself that I am capable of so much more than I thought, and people are watching what I do. Thank you @hablaatx for the nomination and beautiful ceremony. To be surrounded by so many Latinos who have been the fundamental building blocks of this amazing city that I now call home. I thought back about where it really all began for me. I’ve been an artist and creative at heart, and my parents always taught me to do what’s right, to be fair and to be kind. During my time at the University of Iowa, I stood out in my art classes, most of the time being the only Latina student, and looked at differently for my art style. I represented who I was then, but also the populations who were hidden, and they kickstarted my why. My art didn’t make sense to a lot of people in that city, and it was vandalized and covered up, but to those who had been hiding & felt like they never belonged, finally felt seen. My community efforts also have played a part in shaping who I am and what I do. From assisting in multiple conferences supporting and uplifting young Latinas, underrepresented neighborhoods, and working with nonprofits and small businesses, I am not the person that I am without y’all. Your dollars spent at my business pour back into other small businesses who do my manufacturing, which 90% fall under the following categories: women owned, Hispanic/Latino owned, and Texas owned. The flexibility in my work life also helps me to donate my time and dollars to local nonprofits and helping children with school supplies, funding camps, dance lessons, and anything else my community may need. Thank you to everyone who I’ve worked with, who’s supported me, and trusted me to use my creativity and strong work ethic to bring your visions to life. And those who have yet to know me, I am a force to be reckoned with. Thank you, Austin. This is only the beginning. ❤️
