Presenting “Project No. 318” by @altergeneva . After years of wear, the owner wanted to go beyond restoration and give his watch a new identity. Working with @altergeneva, he chose an entirely black design defined by contrasting surface finishes.
•
The watch was fully dismantled and restored. Before the black diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating was applied, the case and larger bracelet links were brushed, while the angles, crown, and intermediate links were mirror polished. This preparation establishes the contrasting textures and reflections, which remain visible beneath the thin coating.
•
The hands and hour markers were hand-painted black and filled with custom black Super-LumiNova, completing the monochrome design. The entire transformation was carried out in Switzerland by specialized artisans, from preparation to final assembly. How do you like it?

Have you ever imagined owning a watch designed entirely for you?

A custom dialogue between color and darkness crafted by @altergeneva . Based in Geneva, Alter develops high-end watch and jewelry customization projects at the intersection of contemporary design and artisanal craftsmanship.

This iconic watch has been reimagined through a dialogue between color and shadow. The dial and bezel are fully set with calibrated natural gemstones arranged in a precise rainbow gradient, framed by a black DLC architecture.

For this project, a couple of collectors sought to transform an iconic watch into a jewelry piece conceived to be worn by both partners. Drawn to rainbow gem-setting, they entrusted Alter with developing its own interpretation. The chosen direction centers on a black case paired with a gem-set dial and bezel, where black absorbs light in order to reveal the brilliance of the stones.

The dial and bezel are entirely dedicated to color. In total, 276 stones form a continuous gradient, each calibrated to watchmaking tolerances of 0.01 mm. Completed over nearly 120 hours of manual work, the setting reflects a demanding level of artisanal mastery. The coexistence of sapphires, tsavorites, rubies, and tourmalines, each with different hardness, required constant adjustment of the setting process, stone by stone. Sourced through ethical supply chains, the stones benefit from full traceability, from their origin to their final setting.

Fully dismantled, the watch was restored and the movement serviced before the case was treated with black DLC. All stages of the work were carried out in Switzerland, in keeping with the traditions of fine watchmaking and jewelry.

Watch customization is a creative process that transforms an iconic foundation into a one-of-a-kind piece. In this project, contemporary design and craftsmanship come together through color and contrast: the bezel and dial are fully set with natural gemstones, selected at the rough stage, color-matched, and precision-cut to create a seamless rainbow gradient✨

A black DLC-treated case enhances the chromatic intensity and sharpens the silhouette, while watchmakers, gemologists, and master setters work in perfect synergy, each operating within strict tolerances and traditional expertise💯
