It was incredibly meaningful to see today’s Wall Street Journal article @wsj celebrating the legacy of Gilt Groupe. We are deeply proud of what we built—not only the company itself, but the community of people who helped build it and went on to create so much more. One of the legacies I’m proudest of is what the article calls Gilt’s “female founder mob”: an extraordinary group of women who went on to found companies, build venture firms, and shape the next generation of entrepreneurship. Alexandra and I used to speculate that New York must have more female founders than anywhere else. So it was especially gratifying to see the data bear that out: according to the Wall Street Journal and PitchBook, New York led the country over the past decade in deal count for female-founded teams raising capital. Gilt Groupe was an extraordinary journey. At times, it was also a very hard one. But perhaps the most meaningful measure of what we built is everything—and everyone—that came after it. The company’s legacy lives on in the people who were part of it, the companies they went on to build, and the ecosystem they helped create. “Many people do not realize that fashion is the second biggest water polluting industry in the world. Washing our clothing alone leaks microfibers into the ocean each year that collectively equal 50 billion plastic bottles. There are easy things we can do to minimize this damage, such as washing synthetics in leak-proof bags (e.g. the Guppy bag) that prevent these pollutants from entering the ocean. Also, limit unnecessarily doing laundry to stop harmful chemicals from washing downstream. By taking small steps, we can help protect water from fashion’s damage”. The most magically epic experience of my life 🙏🏼 Mauritius, Africa 💙🌎 Save the 🐋!! When we jumped in the ocean I had no idea we would be swimming with over 10 Sperm Whales including two baby calves!! Thank you so much for sharing these incredible memories and experiences! It is INCREDIBLE swimming alongside these gentle giants in person🙏🏼♥️ it is a beautiful blessing to share the impact and conservation in Mauritius, Africa with @curtin.mauritius and Professor Bill Tai 💙🌎🐋 Sperm whales, scientifically known as Physeter macrocephalus, are the largest of the toothed whales and possess several distinctive features, including their massive heads, which account for about one-third of their total body length, and their unique ability to dive to great depths in search of food. They are found in all deep oceans, from the equator to the edge of the pack ice in the Arctic and Antarctic, showcasing a wide global distribution. Despite their extensive range, sperm whale populations have faced significant threats from human activities, leading to their current conservation status and ongoing efforts to protect and understand these majestic creatures. Conservation Status. Sperm whales are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has designated sperm whales as “Vulnerable” on the Red List of Threatened Species, with the genetically distinct Mediterranean subpopulation considered “Endangered” This status reflects the historical impact of whaling, which decimated populations, and the ongoing threats they face from human activities.
