The first resident who will join us from November for the Winter 2026/27 session of our Residency Program is London-based artist, writer, and filmmaker Ayo Akingbade.

Working across film, print, and installation, Akingbade’s practice explores themes of power, urbanism and stance. Many of her early works document the effects of rapid social change brought about by gentrification in London, with a particular focus on the borough of Hackney in East London, where she was raised. Akingbade has made twenty-one short films, ranging from experimental hybrids to more conventional narratives.

Their work has been widely screened at venues including; New York Film Festival (US), Viennale (AT), International Film Festival Rotterdam (NL), the Barbican Centre in London, MoMA’s Doc Fortnight in New York and Directors’ Fortnight (FR). Recent solo exhibitions include Show Me The World Mister at the Whitworth (UK) and Crossing at Kunsthalle Zürich. She previously studied at London College of Communication and Royal Academy Schools.

During her residency with SITE, Akingbade will develop a new film work that forms the second chapter in an ongoing trilogy exploring learning, vulnerability, and wellness through swimming. Her current research examines how access to care, leisure and bodily autonomy is shaped by social and economic conditions. This project continues on from Nichtschwimmer (2026), a five minute short film produced and filmed in Aachen, Germany during an artist residency in 2024.

This residency is delivered with the generous support of 401 Richmond (@401richmond) and Anjli Patel (@anjlitoronto) & Parambir Keila (@pskeila). And thank you again to our wonderful Winter 2026/27 Selection Committee: Amal Khalaf (@amalandaplan), Lotus L. Kang (@lotuslkang), and Simon Cole (@coopercole @xinresidence).

Welcome, Ayo! 🩷
