An empty cord paints a picture of optimum cord clamping. Baby receiving all of there blood. This practice should be statutory and an "opt out" kind of service - who would want to opt out of ensuring their baby receives all of their blood? Vital oxygen is delivered to babies still attached to their placenta vis the cord after birth making it an essential part of resuscitation if required
.
.
.
.
.
In reality, many babies still don't receive all of their blood, in many births healthcare professionals are keen to cut the cord very quickly after birth, and we see very full, chunky cords which is seen in the second picture. .

Birth Undisturbed: The potential of art for change
Natalie Lennard is a photographer who normally shoots assignments and fashion models, but since 2017 has made a foray into an entirely new tone of personal work, 'Birth Undisturbed'. Partly inspired by her own experiences of motherhood, she constructs cinematic scenes of physiologically birthing women in history such as the Queen, Calamity Jane and the Virgin Mary, on a mission to subvert the mainstream cliches and bring birth philosophy such as Michel Odent and Ina May Gaskin into the art world. Rousing both controversy and acclaim, the ongoing series has won 3 awards, been featured in media worldwide, and excitingly has influenced women's own births. Natalie will present the newest pieces of Birth Undisturbed, and talk about how an idea for a rebellious art series became a revolutionary movement.

About Katrina Berry
Author of “Why Hypnobirthing Matters”, Katrina has shared the power of hypnobirthing with thousands of expectant parents worldwide since 2009 and is passionate about helping them welcome their babies calmly and confidently.
In her private practice she specialises in stress-related disorders, anxiety and depression, supporting clients with the many challenges of modern day living using a blend of mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT), hypnotherapy. and sound healing.

Having supported many healthcare professionals manage their own well-being so they can better support others, Kat is thrilled to be offering a taster of a sound bath - a shower if you will! - to us at the IMUK conference.

About Sound Healing
Sound has the power to change not just our emotional and spiritual wellbeing, but our physical wellbeing too. Sound baths offer the intention of healing mind, body and emotions, as well as the transformation of consciousness, itself a path to wellbeing.

When conducted with relaxation in mind therapeutic sound sessions can reduce blood pressure and heart rate and relax the autonomic nervous system. Furthermore, the session can slow down our brainwaves, taking them from an awake and alert state to a more altered, deeply meditative state. All that is required of you is to get comfy and receive the balancing resonant sounds from crystal singing bowls, gong, and other therapeutic sound healing instruments.

Delayed Cord Clamping 🤍
.
I had my results back from my presentation earlier in the week and I’m really relieved to have passed 😅
.
For any fellow students, I would really recommend referring to The Blood To Baby Campaign & The Wait For White Campaign for further reading around DCC. I found these campaigns especially useful as they were brilliant sources of evidence based info!
.
Happy Reading Guys 😂🤓

👇*STUDENT MIDWIFE TICKET GIVEAWAY*👇
.
.
Head to Student Midwife Studygram's Facebook or Instagram page for the chance to win a free student ticket to IMUK's National Conference.

We are delighted to present Jessica Rawlinson AKA Student Midwife Studygram. She will be joining us for the conference and bringing some of her beautiful and informative artwork.
Jess was born and lives on the South Coast of England. In September 2014, she left her retail career to pursue her passion of working in healthcare and with women. She returned to college as a mature student to do an access course in Health and Social Professions, handed in her final project in early labour with her son and then commenced studying Midwifery at The University of Surrey in September 2017.
Jess’s learning style is highly visual and she was regularly turning her lecture notes into visual works. This led to the birth of Student Midwife Studygram when she started sharing these on Instagram. Over time, this developed into a business with her selling her artistic revision aids, but she still regularly shares work for free to help other students.
As well as becoming an educator through art, Jessica is also an accomplished pianist. Jessica loves family life and enjoys being a Mum to her young son as well as studying for her degree. The beach is her favourite place.

Speaker Spotlight: Mars Lord
Double award winning doula and birth activist Mars Lord has been a birth keeper for well over a decade. After attending the Paramana Doula course with Michel Odent and Lilliana Lammers, a spark was lit within her and the passion that she discovered for birth and supporting parents has fired her soul ever since. She has had the privilege of working with hundreds of families. A birth activist, with a desire to see the ‘colouring in of the landscape of birth’ and finding out the reasons for the maternal and neonatal morbidity rates amongst the BAME community, Mars created Abuela Doulas a doula preparation course primarily, but not exclusively, for women of colour. Her desire for reproductive justice led to the creation of the ‘Reproductive Justice Retreat’. Mars was recently recognised in the Mayor of London's Hidden Credits campaign and continues to speak out about cultural safety and reproductive justice.

When making a Jessie cat takes longer than the labour and birth!
.
It’s both testament to how difficult I find baking and how easy her birth was! .
My first surge happened at 12.55am and I woke my husband Mitch at 1.42am. We phoned the Birth Centre at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital and they told us to come in but warned us that we might be sent home. We didn’t make it... .
She was hand delivered by Mitch and I with the paramedics arriving 10 mins later who then took us to the Birth Centre to get checked over.
.
I had what I later found out is called a ‘precipitous labour’. My first labour was almost 22 hours so I had no idea it would be this quick. .
For more details on this you can read https://www.tommys.org/pregnancy-information/im-pregnant/pregnancy-news-and-blogs/what-precipitous-birth @tommys_thebabycharity .
I was also surprised to find my husband wandering about after the birth trying to find a shoelace 🤔 Apparently this is the guidance given by the paramedics but luckily I knew there was no need to cut the cord #waitforwhite #nomoreshoelaces Thanks to my #hypnobirthing training and all the amazing work from @amanda.burleigh .
And @singandsignwestlondon is the ONLY class I have repeated with my second born! @dramagicaltyan has been fantastic after previous classes with Harriet 😘
