I’m not usually political and a very small fish in a big pond when it comes to social media influence, but I have a small voice/platform nonetheless. Maybe you won’t agree, but everyone is entitled to share their opinion and support whatever side, as that is our democratic right.

Blocking roads may have caused some inconveniences to commuters and I certainly don’t agree with delaying access to emergency services and hospital appointments but at the same time, enough is enough. It feels like everything is under pressure right now — housing, cost of living, healthcare, infrastructure, immigration, education and social supports, and some of the highest taxes in Europe. People are feeling the strain in every direction and something has to give. The fuel issue is just the breaking point, but it goes much deeper than that. It’s about people struggling to get by, feeling stretched to the limit. These problems were there long before any war and protests. These protesters are just beginning to highlight a system that is failing the Irish people. We deserve better supports and services. For those of us paying high taxes on absolutely everything we deserve a government that will listen as complaining to friends and family won’t change anything. I commend these protesters taking action and showing how serious the situation feels for many people right now. When frustration reaches a point where it spills out like this, it says a lot about where we are as a country.

As I said this won’t be everyone’s view, and I respect that, but for me change won’t come without people standing up. It’s time to come together peacefully instead of being divided. Together we are stronger. ☘️

This week is Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

The govt's recent actions on improving eating disorder services are welcome, and are a testament to all the campaigners who have been working on this for many years.

These disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental health condition – we must keep working together to ensure services are developed to reflect the seriousness of that.

My latest publication introduces the concept of “ignorance culture” to understand how harm, neglect, and exclusion are allowed to persist in eating disorder care, even when people believe they are “doing their best.”

This isn’t about individual blame. It’s about the cultures we create, the questions we don’t ask, and whose testimony is treated as optional. It’s about understanding why institutions do not act - or even become defensive - when concerns are raised about well-documented failures, including when lives are lost

We don’t lack guidelines, they just aren’t implemented. They remain “artefacts” of care, not enacted realities. Sadly, large swathes of the field are complicit in the acceptance of this as the status quo, or at least are not willing to admit the scale of the problem, for fear (of many things).

I don’t know how to make them listen, but I am trying multiple avenues. Some of these avenues are pretty uncomfortable, and some of the make me quite unpopular! But some things are too important to ignore, and we must shine a light.

Everyone involved in eating disorder care deserves better.
