Swimming in Roses

Up early and worth it... one of my favourite photograph of roses.

Captured one June at Seend Manor, the home of Mr & Mrs Stephen Clark (@amandaseend ), whose work with garden designers Isabel & Julian Bannerman (@isabelbannerman ) many years ago brought the Egypt Fountain, the rose garden, and the thatched cottage.

What struck me here was the scale and height—& the roses truly taking over.

Previously published in The English Home, the article & direction by the excellent Caroline Donald @pacets , the garden has matured beautifully over the years—still impeccably maintained, & still a winner.

As the temperature soars, we turn to the English country house swimming pool. These pools are a study in glorious contradiction: chlorinated hedonism cloistered behind ancient Bath stone; a riviera fantasy transplanted to a Wiltshire walled garden; an art-deco pool house adjacent to an 18th century pile.

The best are never brash. They hide in old kitchen gardens, edged with lichen-covered balustrades and box hedging, the turquoise glinting improbably against the sky.

Here we’ve compiled some of our favourite country house swimming pools. G&T anyone? 🏊

1 | Buscot Park, Oxfordshire
2 | Seend Manor, Wiltshire
3 | Biddesden House, Wiltshire
4 | Chettle House, Dorset
5 | Kelvedon Hall, Essex
6| Somerleyton Hall, Suffolk

Beautiful cottage garden by @amandaseend .
When I grow up I would like a garden like this.
Loads of colour and texture. With many garden features.
And a cute cottage , of course.

Last weekend we were back in Wiltshire for another open day, this time visiting the glorious garden of @amandaseend at Seend Manor. It’s an estate of many parts so this is round one of the photos - a cottage garden attached to a red brick house next door to the manor (plus a few from the areas just outside its walls). Honestly I’d have been thrilled if this had been the only part we saw - the roses were in full bloom and the mix of colours, shapes and textures was perfection! Another gem from @wiltshirengs and recommended for next year. Happy Friday everyone 🌸

some captures from a rainy, windy wander through two beautiful open gardens last weekend with @wiltshirengs. the gardens overflowing with sweet scented roses mingled with foxgloves, manicured lawns and avenues, dreamy greenhouses and majestic stately homes. a lovely little wander, despite the grey, blustery weather, around such glorious gardens @maud_seendgarden @amandaseend

When it comes to houses, I like zooming in on the charming little details like a back door with roses growing or a window with wisteria.

Thank you @houseandgardenuk @aida__gram for including my paintings of The Limonaia at @cetinale and The Garden Door at my parents house in the lovely piece about house portraiture.

Doorways and windows make charming paintings and they are great presents for those who love and tend to them. Here’s some of the sketches I’ve done over the years.
