Kamasi Washington & Andrè 3000’s Dream State is definitely the song of the year for me as of right now. After hearing this collab, I can’t help but think that an album of the two collaborating together would move mountains. Also, the world definitely needs a Kamasi/Andrè 3000/Terrace Martin collaboration as well. That would be a game changer for sure.

Link in bio for full video.

Kamasi Washington - Harmony of Difference

It is such a wonderful time to be alive. The jazz movement feels alive and fresh. Many great artists are producing so much music at an extremely high level and it is hard to keep track of everything that is being released. Kamasi Washington has been on my radar for a long time and I've spent some time with his classic 2015 record The Epic. But it wasn't until this winter when my brother got me hooked on Washingtons 2017 EP Harmony of Difference. A fairly short but a powerful recording that ticks all my boxes for wonderful, and a must listen, music.

The record is a part of a project that Washington, along with his sister Amani and A.G. Rojas, did for the Whitney Museum of American Art. Amani did art and A.G. Rojas did a movie. Washington created a five piece movement that concludes in a sixth composition that blends the previous five movements into one long piece, a true testament of art!

I would say that the expression of joy is present through the record where the opening desire makes me smile. The music is not chaotic and the listeners are guided through the emotions and soundscapes that Washington and his band puts together. If you want to listen to jazz with depth and with a strong message, this is a record for you! The B side, with longer track Truth is a track that the experienced jazz-listener will dig. There is good vocals that makes me think of Max Roaches wonderful record It's Time.

But again. It feels unreal to be able to hear such great music, that really touches me, that is from the present day. 2024 feels like the year when my old jazz records have to compete with all the wonderful stuff that has been released over the present years. So do yourself a favour and listen to some modern jazz, you won't be disappointed!
