POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Pregnant with her first child, Leslie Jordan was diagnosed with preeclampsia in her third trimester. Devastated but determined, Leslie managed her diagnosis and eventually gave birth to a baby boy. After delivering, Leslie started experiencing a terrible headache, and soon, her speech slurred and her body felt like it was on fire. Leslie suffered a stroke and woke up in the ICU paralyzed.

Having to learn how to walk and talk again, Leslie’s perseverance was vital to her recovery. Today, she wants women to know the signs and symptoms of stroke so they can give themselves the best chance of survival.

Preeclampsia affects 1 in 25 pregnancies in the United States, but is most common in Black women, and can lead to stroke. Black women are 57% more likely to have a stroke during pregnancy than other women. #BMHW24

Taking care of your mind, body & spirit is important to your overall wellbeing. Find what works for you in this moment and do it. Something that helped settle your mind in the past, may not work all the time, so have a toolbox of ideas to pull from so you never let life pull you into darkness.
Trust me, I’m learning this the hard way. I’ve never experienced grief like I have been these last 101 days. Things that I’ve done in the past used to work immediately to regulate my nervous system aren’t quite cutting it right now. Luckily I have other things to try to help navigate the pain that I’m in. And I’ll keep trying until I find something that works because I refuse to sink.
Need some ideas to add to your toolbox?
Some of my Heart Sisters and I share what works for us.
What’s your go-to tip for mental wellness?

A #MothersDay reminder from stroke survivor Leslie Jordan, a part of the Go Red for Women Real Women 2023 Class of Survivors.

"Put yourself first so you can be the best mom you can for those that you love and care for."

Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women and the leading cause of death for new moms. Today and every day, make your health and well-being a priority.

I stand beside 11 amazing survivors. We are part of the @goredforwomen movement. Our goal is raise awareness about stroke and heart disease in women. This mission is incredibly important to me. I didn’t know I was having 2 out of my 3 heart attacks because I didn’t know anything about the symptoms that women experience. I thought what you see on television was is. But it’s not. Had I heard that someone could feel wrist and elbow pain, I never would’ve gotten on a treadmill every day trying to run a 5K or waited 5 days to see a doctor and go to the hospital. I would’ve known what was happening as it was happening. But I didn’t.

So joining with the @american_heart to help raise awareness is shifting the energy around having 3 heart attacks for me. It’s allowing me to find a silver lining in an incredibly traumatic experience. It’s allowing me to pass on what I now know to others. It’s giving me a chance to help save a life. It’s given me a community of survivors that can understand how difficult it was and continues to be. It’s given me 11 badass stroke and heart sisters!

All of these women have something incredibly important share.
Each story is different.
Each story is shocking.
Each story needs to be told. And not just told quietly, they need to be screamed from the top of the Empire State Building for the world to hear.
Each story can teach you something that could save your life or the life of someone you love.

Head to the @american_heart @goredforwomen YouTube page and watch each video.
