🌿 THE AMAZON IS MORE THAN A FOREST. IT IS HOME.

What happens when the people protecting their ancestral land refuse to let the world ignore their voices?

Meet Nemonte Nenquimo, a Waorani Indigenous leader from Ecuador who helped turn a fight for her community’s land into a landmark environmental victory. @nemonte.nenquimo

In 2019, the Waorani people won a court ruling protecting approximately 500,000 acres of their territory from oil exploitation. Their fight demonstrated that Indigenous communities are not simply affected by environmental decisions they have rights, knowledge, and a powerful voice in shaping them. @amazonfrontlines

And the work continued. In 2023, Ecuadorians voted to keep oil underground in a major part of Yasuní National Park, reinforcing the power of collective action for environmental protection. 🌎

But protecting the Amazon is an ongoing struggle. @alianzaceibo

Nemonte’s story reminds us that conservation must include the people who call these lands home.

To celebrate 25 years of Saving an Angel, @reagarvey , @nemonte.nenquimo and @mitchandersonaf came together to look back on their journey and the incredible work they’ve done together with the Clearwater project.

A beautiful, honest and deeply emotional conversation about their shared experiences, the impact of their work and the connection they’ve built along the way.

A big thank you to Nemonte and Mitch for sharing your stories, your passion and your hearts with us. 🩵

🌎 Across Latin America, people working alongside Indigenous Earth Defenders face different challenges, but share a commitment to supporting communities defending their territories.

Last August, allies and trainers from Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia came together on Ilha de Cotijuba in Belém, Brazil, to exchange experiences, learn from one another, and strengthen their connections.

Over three days, participants shared stories from the field, discussed mapping and monitoring approaches, explored common challenges, and learned from the different ways communities organize to protect their lands.

There was also shared food, music, and plenty of portuñol! 💚 The gathering was a reminder that territorial defense is not only about technology. It's also about relationships, trust, and the collective knowledge that grows when people come together.

In our latest blog, María Alvarez Malvido shares reflections on why gatherings like this are themselves a strategy for strengthening territorial defense.

Two plants. Two rituals. Two cultures. But a surprisingly similar way of turning nature into self-expression.

Henna and achiote have more in common than you think 👀🌿...

Both are used to adorn the body.
Both carry meaning, identity and tradition.
And both have been used for generations to connect people with culture and place.

Different roots. Same beautiful idea: nature becomes part of who we are.

Fuck Columbus. Before colonization. Before the borders, the monuments, and the history books that tried to erase them: Indigenous peoples were here and are STILL HERE.

Today is about the power of storytelling and restoring the truth to history. Recognizing how myths and popular stories covered up crimes, theft and genocide.

It’s also about honoring the thriving Indigenous nations that existed with their own governments, cultures, languages, economies, and relationships to the land.

Across the Americas, Indigenous peoples have reclaimed this holiday as a day of resistance. Not just to look backwards, but to talk about how to protect their territories, preserve and revitalize their languages, defend their communities, and organize for the futures they deserve.

At BLD PWR, we believe honoring Indigenous peoples means more than acknowledging history. It means using the power of storytelling to challenge the narratives we’ve inherited, standing in solidarity with Indigenous-led movements, and supporting the right of Indigenous nations to determine their own futures.

How do we protect and empower the land back movement?

To all the Indigenous storytellers and community protectors out there, WE ARE WITH YOU!
