Los Angeles-based painter Amber Larks (@amberlarks) and her partner experienced “core-rattling” isolation and heartbreak after his 2022 SARS-CoV-2 infection became Long COVID. To process their experiences, she turned to her longtime love of art. The result is nine paintings that made up Larks’s debut solo show, “APERTURE,” which took place at the Moosey contemporary art gallery in Norwich, England in fall 2025. Kelly Meiners (@kellymeiners.art) had never even attempted to paint, but a 2021 SARS-CoV-2 infection left her mostly bedbound and isolated in a dark room with severe Long COVID. Using “intuitive, physically demanding painting as both communication and healing,” Meiners created 42 paintings that were displayed in February at the “Inner Lines” exhibit at the Greenlease Gallery at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. Larks’ exhibit drew its name and its theme from the opening in a camera lens through which light passes; aperture controls both the brightness and depth of field in photographs. Larks wanted her paintings to capture what it feels like to let the light in. She said her work is both melancholic and full of hope, and that it honors the public health and Long COVID advocacy communities that she’s joined since her partner’s diagnosis. To send off the show, she hosted a mask-required event at her studio in Los Angeles with air purifiers and open windows. For Meiners, public education about Long COVID is as important to her as the experience of viewing her art. The opening of her show featured a course on Long COVID, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and post-exertional malaise (PEM), with rehab professionals in attendance. As a disabled physical therapist, Meiners also spoke briefly at the event. Larks and Meiners join many other Long COVID voices who have found a way to express their sorrow, loneliness, frustration, anger, and even humor and hope through the arts.
