🌊✨ How We Do What We Do 🪸📸

Diving deep into our mission! Our Executive Director is on a snorkel adventure, capturing snapshots of juvenile corals and searching for survivors among our endangered species. 🪸💙

Swipe to see the moment we discovered a young pillar coral! Considered endangered and in many areas functionally extinct, these majestic corals once dominated, creating vibrant underwater cityscapes for our fishy friends. 🐠🏙️

By identifying survivors, montioring them, and safeguarding their genetics, we’re paving the way for future restoration efforts!

Thanks, @amdeepmcs, for snapping these shots and coming out with us last week!

University of Exeter researchers are 2 weeks into an expedition funded by the Darwin Initiative to create a Marine Turtle Action Plan for Montserrat. The project, led by the University of Exeter and the Government of Montserrat, will work with local communities to help manage marine #turtle populations. 🐢

The University of Exeter team have been carrying out turtle #research alongside the Government of Montserrat team – checking for tracks by day and then deploying flipper, PIT and #satellite tags by night. Check out what the turtles are doing here: https://my.wildlifecomputers.com/data/map/?id=61196a7b2c72b03780432020 🛰

Meanwhile, project partners Marine Conservation Society have been carrying out interviews using their tried-and-tested Community Voice Method to record the thoughts, opinion, values and knowledge of local people to factor into the plan. Find out more: https://www.mcsuk.org/news/turtle-conservation-work-in-montserrat-begins/ 🗣

All team members have been doing outreach work with local community groups, including a meeting with the Governor of #Montserrat. We look forward to continuing to engage the community on their attitudes towards turtles and their #conservation.

We've been preparing for a very special trip 🐢 After more than a year of pandemic delays, we’re finally heading to the island of #Montserrat - one of the UK’s Caribbean Overseas Territories - thanks to funding from the UK government’s Darwin Plus Initiative

The project - A Marine Turtle Action Plan for Montserrat - is led by the Government of Montserrat and the @UniofExeter and will work with local communities to help recover and manage #MarineTurtle populations

The island hosts nesting populations of endangered green and critically endangered #HawksbillTurtles however, little is known about the size of the populations nesting there

We will gather biological data, including nesting beach surveys and satellite tracking of the breeding female turtles, to develop a local turtle conservation action plan

Good news 👏 We've been working with @tcreef_fund to treat diseased corals in the Turks & Caicos Islands. New results from the treatment have given us hope that the infected corals can be saved 🙌
