Michelle Yanez-Olivares, a proud Chilean Australian, founded Amiga Mía in 2017 as a digital brand that celebrates Latin culture through an Australian lens, embracing the vibrant mix of languages and traditions with a Spanglish essence. Raised in a culturally Chilean household after her family immigrated to Australia in the mid-80s, Michelle's upbringing uniquely shaped her perspective, blending her Latin American heritage with her Australian experience. Studying Sociology at University, Michelle's passion was always human interaction and to work closely with groups of people. Michelle's background as a community professional in the tech industry, combined with her experience in leadership roles in eCommerce, has built the skills and knowledge on navigating the digital landscape and cultural communities. Her skills has helped to build Amiga Mía reach a global audience of over 70k across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok. Now, Michelle has recently resigned her job and has taken a leap of faith to pursue scaling Amiga Mía into the tech space and formalising the brand. @soy_amigamia

After starting Amiga Mia in 2017 as a daughter of Chilean migrants, I just wanted to connect with fellow Latin people in Australia. This journey took me in many beautiful places such as • Planning & hosting 3 Latina-led live panels in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane • Planning & hosting 4 community meet ups • Speaking at 6 Latin-led workshops on skills development • Hosting 4 major Latin festivals • Developing and selling Latin-worded jewellery • Interviewing and sharing the story of over 50 Latin community leaders, business owners, artists and entrepreneurs, meeting thousands of people from the Latin American diaspora. This was all while I held my full-time job as senior management roles in tech and big global companies managing over 250 people across transnational teams. It’s time… Time to share all my knowledge.
