We missed @amirsulaiman so chose to honour the evening and keep the door open for POEMS. In a matter of hours this gathering took form beginning with the beautiful film screening of Laying Flowers.:.Setting Fires by Amir Sulaiman followed by the brilliant poetry of @sakiinahmaria @psycheofbilal @tonya.bolton.50 @ayanmoaden and audience contributions by Toqueer Ahmed and Sameena Salim. All this held in pink light and stunning visuals generated by @manpreetdarroch and sound by @ozzystylez ending with a launch of a video by @aliaerosol made to resuscitate the apathy in our streets of Birmingham made to inspire us to care for our spaces. Thank you @soulcityarts for the work your phenomenal work and honouring me as a part of you. Audio credit to the incredible Amir Sulaiman- ‘ you will be someone’s ancestor- act Accordingly!

We at Soul City Arts were very excited about hosting Amir Sulaiman but we bring you the bad news that, due to unforeseen circumstances, he is unable to attend.

Here is a personal video recording from Amir himself explaining his circumstances.

We appreciate your support and will be giving you a full refund for your tickets.

HOWEVER, we are still gathering for a sharing session which will include the planned screening of Amir’s short film, and then the stage will be open for others to share. We really hope that you will still be able to join us this evening simply as our guests.

We would love to still have you experience the space beautifully lit with our multiple digital screens in place.

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this has caused. We are also extremely disappointed.

This is a proud mama post! I’ve been sitting on these pics thinking of what I wanted to say… my baby boy… Truthfully God blessed me with a wonderful sun. A one of one! I am eternally grateful because he has been my saving grace this lifetime and every lifetime I would choose him to be my Sun. My North Star, My greatest teacher and my not so little anymore friend. I am so proud of you for seeing it through. This is your senior year & we’ve been on this basketball journey for 15 or so years. You have worked your butt off to get here and I am so proud of you! Not just because you are a great basketball player but because you are a great person. Congratulations on being named Team Captain. The sky can’t even limit you! Love you always! Have a fantastic season! 😘❤️🙏🏾

Your first birthday without you here. Almost a year later and I’m still figuring out how to navigate that.

My father. My hero. My teacher. I’m still learning from you, even now.

I miss you more than I can express in words but I’m gonna find my peace, Inshallah. Rest well and know that I still got you. The struggle continues, and the promises I made still stand.

May Allah grant you a spacious grave, peace, and the highest rank in Jannah. Ameen.

I wrote this poem for my quiet friend I used to hang with when I was 18 years old. I remember being in his mom’s basement on the east side & he would just play records while we all kicked it. I told him I wanted to put my poems to music & he was like, absolutely.

It’s one of the few poems of mine that makes me emotional when i recite it.

He went on to record with some of the same artists I became connected with in NYC. He came to my “going away” party before i moved to Brooklyn.

He was/is a gentle soul & a genius.

Thank you @karriemriggins1 for asking me to read the poem at @detroitjazzfest a few years ago with @common @mbthelight @jrocc210 & @black_milk

I’m honored that my son produced this music. Another gentle soul with an incredible ear from Detroit. @kingmooreart

20 years ago, I put out my first mixtape. To the backdrop of my crew falling apart after the sudden death of our brother Nofy Fannan, I delved deep into my grief and started learning how to engineer, write and record myself. It took me down a deep isolation of my practice. Those 10,000 hours of grinding in the studio, touring, shooting videos and focusing on the art made me burn out many times. Pre-content era and post, I always focused on the entire package. The art is just as important as the sound. I’m 15 projects deep now. Since then I have been blessed with the most beautiful of community, collaborators and most importantly, friends.

Through it all; I never put business first. I wanted a sustainable career, one that allows me to be with my family while staying in my integrity and intention. It was never just about music. It was about cultural language, visual information, multi media practice and challenging status quo around the industrialization of art and spirit.

This next year, Inshallah, I’ll be dropping the best art I’ve ever made. For myself. For the people who have supported me. For my creative circle. For my frenemies.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me actualize my vision, believed in me and still supports me. Independence is major.

I’ve made all these projects available on bandcamp for the first time ever.
