Amman Design Week 2026: Reading Jordan Through Design

At the heart of Amman Design Week 2026 is the idea of accumulation: an exploration of Jordan through the layers of everyday practices, material environments and cultural memories that shape what people create, what they value and how they live.

Rather than viewing design as the production of new objects alone, this year’s concept invites a closer look at what already exists: the traditions, materials, habits and shared experiences that continue to shape the country’s visual and cultural landscape.

These accumulated layers are neither static nor confined to the past. They are constantly reinterpreted, adapted and reconfigured through everyday life, reflecting the relationship between heritage and contemporary expression.

In this sense, design becomes more than an aesthetic practice. It offers a way to understand how a society lives with its surroundings, preserves its collective memory and gives new meaning to the familiar.

Amman Design Week places these ongoing processes at the centre of Jordan’s creative conversation.

🤝 Yesterday, the Embassy of Switzerland in Jordan attended the Community Dialogue Session organised by the Friends of Jordan Festivals (FJF) in Al-Salt.

The Session, titled “Youth & Heritage – Keeping Al-Salt’s Stories Alive”, took place at the historic Abu Jaber House.

Moderated by H.E. Reem Abu Hassan, the panel discussion brought together representatives from the Greater Salt Municipality, Amman Design Week, Turquoise Mountain, the Jordanian Society for the Preservation of Heritage, UNESCO, and civil society actors.

🏛️💬 The dialogue explored the role of cultural heritage in shaping local identity, preserving traditional crafts and oral histories, and engaging younger generations in safeguarding Al-Salt's heritage.

🌿 The Embassy of Switzerland in Jordan is pleased to support initiatives that promote community participation and the sustainable revitalization of Jordan's heritage assets.

🤝 حضرت سفارة سويسرا في الأردن أمس جلسة الحوار المجتمعي التي نظمتها جمعية «أصدقاء مهرجانات الأردن» (FJF) في مدينة السلط.

وعُقدت الجلسة، التي حملت عنوان «الشباب والتراث – الحفاظ على قصص السلط حية»، في بيت أبو جابر التاريخي.

وأدارت معالي ريم أبو حسان حلقة النقاش التي جمعت ممثلين عن بلدية السلط الكبرى، وأسبوع عمان للتصميم، و«توركواز ماونتن»، والجمعية الأردنية لحفظ التراث، واليونسكو، بالإضافة إلى جهات فاعلة من المجتمع المدني.

وتناول الحوار دور التراث الثقافي في تشكيل الهوية المحلية، والحفاظ على الحرف التقليدية والروايات الشفوية، وإشراك الأجيال الشابة في الحفاظ على تراث السلط. 🏛️💬

ويسر سفارة سويسرا في الأردن أن تدعم المبادرات التي تعزز المشاركة المجتمعية وإحياء التراث الأردني بشكل مستدام. 🌿

Visual identity for the fourth edition of @ammandesignweek, returning in 2026 after a seven-year hiatus under the theme Accumulations directed by by @shejazin & @bishert

The identity approaches accumulation as an act of remembrance within the Arabic script, inhabiting the time between Arabic and its Nabataean antecedent, echoing traces of an earlier script embedded in Jordan’s landscape. It momentarily suspends the script’s cursivity, allowing its letters to stand apart and recall an earlier inscriptional logic.

Although Arabic is defined by connection, a handful of letters still carry the memory of separation, recalling an earlier life lived in stone. This interruption becomes the work’s premise: a momentary pause in the script’s continuous movement, where letterforms recall an ancestral posture before resuming their stride.

الهوية البصرية للنسخة الرابعة من أسبوع عمّان للتصميم، العائد في عام 2026 بعد انقطاع دام سبع سنوات، تحت عنوان «تراكمات».

ينطلق العمل من التراكم بوصفه فعلًا من أفعال استعادة الذاكرة داخل الكتابة العربية، مستوطنًا المسافة الزمنية بين العربية وسلفها النبطي، ومستحضرًا آثار كتابة أقدم ما زالت منقوشة في مختلف بقاع الأردن. يعلّق العمل انسيابية الخط للحظة، فتستقلّ الحروف عن بعضها، مستعيدةً منطقًا كتابيًا نقشِيًّا أقدم.

وعلى الرغم من أن الإتصال سمةٌ أساسية في الكتابة العربية، لا تزال بعض حروفها تحمل ذاكرة الانفصال، مستحضرةً حياةً سابقة حين كانت تقطن الحروف الحجارة. ومن هنا تنبثق فكرة العمل: توقّف عابر في حركة الخط المتصلة، تستعيد فيه الحروف هيئةً موروثة قبل أن تستأنف خطاها.

عُرض عمل «البَيْن» في هنجر رأس العين ضمن أسبوع عمّان للتصميم 2026، بتنسيق من قيم المعارض فيصل طبارة.
