A message from Porch View Dances 2025 choreographer, Mio Sakamoto @amomiohk:

Beyond Words is a free 10-session contemporary dance program for folks engaging with the Japanese language taking place in downtown Toronto.

This program invites those who speak, or are interested in learning Japanese to explore the rich terrain of non-verbal expression—using movement to express ideas found in the Japanese language that don’t easily translate into English. The program sessions include weekly workshop rehearsals and outdoor community performances. Participation will foster creativity, self-expression, and cultural connection. This program promotes wellness, connection, and community building. No dance experience needed—just curiosity and a willingness to move!

Program Dates:
June 12 – July 20, 2025

Workshops:
6:00–8:00 PM on June 12, 19, 26 and July 3, 10, 11

Tech & Dress Rehearsals:
Monday July 14 & Tuesday 15 at 7:00 PM (Call time: 6:00 PM)

Performances:
Saturday July 19 at 7:00 PM
Sunday July 20 at 2:00 PM (Call time: 1 hour before each performance)

Locations:
Performances: Seaton Village (as part of Porch View Dances by Kaeja d’Dance: https://www.kaeja.org/pvd2025)

Workshops: IGAC (180 Shaw Street, Studio 103)

Fees:
This is a free program. Participants will receive an honorarium of $250.00 for their involvement.

Submission Deadline:
Monday June 2, 2025

*We have space for 6 participants. To make the most of our time together, we’ll give priority to those who can attend all sessions.

**This program is geared toward youth ages 22–30, so folks in that age range will be prioritized.

***This program is not limited to a racial identity, ie. Japanese Canadian. However priority will be considered for those most deeply engaged in the Japanese language and culture.
