I am humbled to return to my hometown of Kitchener on Sunday, November 8, during Holocaust Education Week, to share my father's story and how his experiences shaped my life and my work as a choreographer and filmmaker.

My father, Maurycy Nosal’s, entire family in Poland was murdered during the Holocaust, including his first wife and son. He endured forced labour in the ghettos, survived Auschwitz and narrowly escaped Nordhausen. His experiences profoundly shaped my understanding of family, community and the importance of remembering and sharing our histories.

For over 30 years, I have shared my father's story with audiences around the world. Returning to Kitchener holds particular meaning. It was here that Maurycy, known as Morton Norris in Canada, was sponsored by his aunt and uncle, began a new life, built a home and raised a family.

I feel honoured to share his story in the community where our family's Canadian journey began. by @kaejaddance

Aria Evans @politicalmovement steps into creation with @karenkaeja and @allenkaeja for their 7th lifeDUET this fall. The commission process begins at the Kaeja creative incubator Residency in Saugeen Nation / Town of South Bruce Peninsula. KDD has also commissioned their long time composer @edgardomorenomusic. K and A are thrilled to dig deep with both of these great artists, whom they have journeyed through beautiful collaborations with over the years. The new lifeDUET will premiere Spring 2027 (look out for date & location soon!).

KDD lifeDUETs have been created by Claudia Moore, Peter Bingham, Marie-Josée Chartier, Tedd Robinson, Ben Kamino, and Hanna Kiel. Karen and Allen have toured lifeDUET combos to Spain (Bilbao Guggenheim Museum), Mexico (Coyoacan), India (Arrangham Dance Theatre), Oregon (Smith Fine Arts), across Canada (most recently Vancouver Island with BCMAS and DOTE), and in Toronto, with more dates in the works.

A little experiment filmed in the old RTS, now TMU.
Fourteen years later, it feels like time to let it out into the world.
Grateful for these moments of synchronicity, movement, music and memory.

Karen and Allen Kaeja and the Kaeja d’Dance Board of Directors are super excited to welcome Carla Ritchie as their new General Manager! Carla brings 25 years of experience in the non-profit sector, with a rich background in arts management and stage management to the company. She has previously worked with KDD as our Tour Manager in 2024, during a BC lifeDUETs touring program with BCMAS and DOTE. Thank you to Adina Herling for onboarding Carla during the month of July and for all her wonderful contributions to KDD over the past 2 years as General Manager. We wish Adina all the very best in her future endeavours.

We welcome Carla with open arms and are thrilled to share her services with Jaberi Dance Theatre. In partnership with JDT, we’ve developed this role to create a full-time opportunity that allows Carla to support both companies, a model we're proud to continue building.

About Carla
Carla Ritchie is a Vancouver-based arts leader and producer with more than twenty-five years of experience supporting contemporary theatre and dance in Canada and internationally. She has worked alongside artists and companies from Victoria to Halifax, combining strategic leadership with a commitment to artistic excellence.

Her dance stage management highlights include Red Sky Performance’s Trace at Jacob’s Pillow, Backbone and Miigis: Underwater Panther at Canadian Stage, and Tono at the China Shanghai International Arts Festival; Kaeja d’Dance’s lifeDUET Vancouver Island tour and Dancing on the Edge; and co-producing Kidd Pivot’s Assembly Hall. Throughout her career, Carla has led operations, fundraising, touring, partnerships, and organizational development, supporting artists in realizing complex productions and building sustainable organizations.

Carla recently completed her MBA at Simon Fraser University and has trained in anti-bias, harm reduction, and decolonial practices through the Pathways Program. by @kaejaddance
