Ravensbourne (Amy Coomer, Bakers Lane Books)

Amy Coomer’s Ravensbourne opens with the apparent promise of a murder mystery, but beneath its compelling premise is a story about grief, friendship and first love.

When Maisie’s best friend, Logan, dies of a drug overdose at a music festival, she is thrown into a world of uncertainty. Convinced that someone must be responsible for his death, Maisie sets out to find the person who supplied the fatal pill. Her search leads her to a series of anonymous love letters written to Logan and to the drama students at her school – the people Maisie and Logan used to make fun of. What she finds, however, is an unexpected group of friends and a boy, Wheeler, who gradually works his way into her heart.

The blurb for Ravensbourne frames the story as a mystery about a girl willing to go to any lengths to find her friend’s killer. However, it is ultimately a story about grief, friendship and love.

Maisie is snarky and rude, positioning herself and Logan above everyone else. Logan’s death forces her to re-evaluate who she thinks she is, embrace people she would never usually speak to and realise that kindness can bring positive change. Her greatest growth comes through her relationship with Wheeler, who challenges her to be her true self and embrace her softer side.

Coomer (Boys on a Train, Rosemary Boy) explores heavy themes, including grief, drug use and first sexual experiences, with an authentic teenage voice that captures the intensity of adolescence during such a difficult time. Older teens aged 16 and over may begin reading Ravensbourne for the mystery but will continue for Maisie’s emotional journey. It will particularly appeal to readers of Fleur Ferris.

Happy publication day to Ravensbourne by @amycoomer

Somebody knows.

Somebody knows who gave Logan a pill that ended his life at Ravensbourne Music Festival.

Somebody knows what it was like to be loved by Logan, and to write him letters they never thought would be found.

Maisie McDevitt is going to find that somebody, even if it means infiltrating the worst group of people she knows: the Year 12 drama students at Morningford College, the most elite private school in Australia.

‘A gripping and evocative novel, Coomer captures the uncertainty and anguish of youth with impressive authenticity, exploring difficult and important subjects with sensitivity and focus. Ravensbourne is the work of a compelling voice in young adult literature.’ – ROBBIE COBURN, AUTHOR
