THE SUBSTRATE OF EXTRACTION (10/23-24) FEATURED ARTWORKS_PART 1 CLEAN LIFE by Marina Lisa Komiya @monosugoiame investigates the biological, ethical, and political systems surrounding cultured meat and cellular technologies. A video is projected onto a circular screen resembling a petri dish, featuring real-time microscopic images of cells alongside a voice-over generated by an AI trained on Komiya’s voice. Beginning with questions around animal rights and the promise of “clean” meat, the work expands into questions of cellular rights, abortion, veganism, greenwashing, and the political conditions surrounding life and reproduction. The installation also includes a series of images created using human HeLa cells and chicken cells, including a portrait of Henrietta Lacks, from whom the original HeLa cells were taken without her knowledge. - Curated by Amy Xiaofan Jiang @amyjiang517 Presented by @uaad.art and @mesh_art_center Supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan; Japan Arts Council; CG-ARTS; WAN: Art & Tech Creators Global Network; and Japan Creator Support Fund. RSVP link in bio! In Decomposition of Aspergillus luchuensis, @monosugoiame examines the colonial history of fermentation, tracing how Okinawan kōji mold was introduced to Korea under Japanese rule while traditional Korean brewing practices were suppressed. Using mold to transform imagery inspired by the wartime propaganda manga Yamato Family, the work explores how ideals of family, purity, and national identity were constructed through colonial power. Through microbial decomposition, Marina challenges these structures and blurs the boundaries between decay and fermentation. Giant Micro Plastic by Tsuyoshi Anzai @an2ai transforms fragments of microplastic into monumental sculptural forms. By dramatically enlarging materials that are normally invisible to the human eye, Anzai shifts microplastic from an overlooked environmental residue into something physically and visually impossible to ignore. The work begins with a material produced through human consumption and industrial systems, but one that has since escaped its original purpose and entered larger ecological cycl

RSVP link in bio! Tsuyoshi Anzai @an2ai is a Japanese artist whose practice explores the relationship between humans and plastic through sculpture, photography, and simple mechanical systems. Using improvised combinations of everyday objects and motors, he creates machines that reveal unexpected relationships between human-made materials and their environments. In recent years, his practice has focused on microplastics and the ways these nearly invisible materials circulate beyond their original functions. In his work Giant Micro Plastic, he transforms fragments of microplastic into monumental sculptural forms. By dramatically enlarging materials that are normally invisible to the human eye, Tsuyoshi shifts microplastic from an overlooked environmental residue into something physically and visually impossible to ignore. Lisa Marina Komiya @monosugoiame explores new forms of reproduction through a queer perspective, working across biotechnology, performance, video, manga, and other media. Their practice examines the relationships between bodies, technology, ecology, and systems of power. Marina is also the host of the queer artist platform “FAQ?” and a member of the collective “Reproductive Garden Project.” In their work CLEAN LIFE, Marina investigates the biological, ethical, and political systems surrounding cultured meat and cellular technologies. Projected onto a circular screen resembling a petri dish, the work combines real-time microscopic imagery of cells with an AI-generated voice-over trained on Marina’s voice.

@an2ai

The many moments of #MakingAndMateriality ✨ That’s a wrap on our inaugural season of Making and Materiality! Over the past three months, thirteen artists, makers and researchers from across the world came together to explore the concept, practice and skill of making. Through tapestry, weaving, crochet, ceramics, sculpture, biomaterial research, performance and more, they investigated questions of sustainability, technology, material transformation, community, and embodied knowledge. These photos capture just some of the conversations, experiments, collaborations, and celebrations that shaped the season. Thank you to our residents for sharing their creativity, generosity and curiosity with us, and to everyone who made the season possible! We can’t wait to see where these projects and ideas travel next! This may be the end of the season, but it’s only the beginning of sharing its outcomes.
