Clearing out the studio where my practice has been developing over the past year was so emotional 🥺

This is where I truly began embracing myself as an artist, where I started healing my relationship to learning and developing my practice of self-teaching.

I experimented with new and old materials. I allowed myself to play, and learned how to trust the process of making and my own intuition.

This space is also where I collaborated, shared ideas and worked alongside @ana_mastretta who always inspired me to keep pushing myself to develop my practice.

Sad that it's over, but so grateful it happened ✨️💗🌟💐

Last week we had the first session of the workshop Landscapes from Memory in collaboration with the members from @we.are.noria delivered by @ana_mastretta and curated by me.

This workshop seeks to explore through textile collage the memories of those places that still inhabit us and persist in our affection through the past of time and space.

Thank you to all the attendees for your time and valuable contributions, to Ana for this amazing work and to Noria Collective for supporting the process and allowing us to be part of their community, and special thanks to @set.social.peckham for giving us the space.

This past year on the @maartsandlearning
has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life 🌟 Not only have I developed as an artist but as a learner and a teacher as well. It has pushed me in so many ways and for that I am eternally grateful for the amazing people I have worked with and learned with on the course 💐💞🌷

My final project explores what happens when I let go of the need to make perfect work. By developing an alternative way of learning based on play, experimentation, and self-teaching. I wanted to encapsulate how my roles as Learner-Artist-Teacher inform and shape one another. By embracing play, making mistakes, and remaining open to change, I will continue to discover new ways of understanding both my art practice and myself.

"Routes to Becoming" is the final exhibition of our journey with @maartsandlearning .Through practice based research, we questioned our connections to learning and education, exploring core notions of belonging, playfulness, memory, and nature.

We are incredibly grateful to all of our tutors, teachers, and technicians who made this exhibition possible after an incredible year (or two!) of learning and growing together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Europe 2.0, a day of talks and performances exploring myth, folklore, ritual, and contemporary art inspired by Neolithic culture.

The day began with a panel chaired by Daniel Pryde-Jarman, featuring Saulius Leonawicius, Tom Cardew, Ana Mastretta-Yanes, Joanne Masding, Lewis Graham, and Prof. Umut Korkut. Together they discussed ancestral landscapes, myth-making, and reclaiming spaces from far-right narratives.

Performances followed, including Critics in Crates on Pallets, a collective live reading of texts on institutional critique, publishing, artist-led spaces, and contemporary art discourse. Joshua Uvieghara, The Artist Taxi Driver, Dr. Janneke Adema, Daniel Pryde-Jarman, Mark Seerin and Nat Pitt

Joanne Masding then presented a live reading from Mermaid’s Taxonomy, blending folklore, physiology, humour and Mermaids: “This is just a sock!”

The day concluded with YOUR ANCESTORS WERE FREAKS TOO, in which Saulius Leonawicius transformed local clay and a battered British Army helmet into a series of bowls before leaving them behind and returning home.

Thank you to all the artists, speakers, performers, and audience members who made the day possible

PV 28th May 5-8pm

Saulius Leonawičius Invites… is a group exhibition centred around a solo presentation by Saulius Leonawičius.

Ten invited artists present works and artefacts engaging with ancient histories, folklore, Neolithic culture, and ritual practices. These contributions expand the exhibition into a collective inquiry drawn upon the historical framework of Marija Gimbutienė’s theories of a peaceful, egalitarian, pre-Indo-European society. By juxtaposing this vision of past social organisation with contemporary anxieties shaped by geopolitical instability, the project opens a space for reflection. In a time marked by war and uncertainty, Leonawičius proposes a moment of retreat, an opportunity to reconsider cultural memory and future possibility.

The exhibition culminates in a new live performance work by Saulius entitled Your Ancestors were Freaks Too, together with performances by Joanne Masding and Pallet Show + Artist talks on Saturday 6th June - 🔗 in bio.

When #history dares distort or desensitise, the artist stands in the way, paints and repaints the same memory until nothing but the truth remains...
