It’s not often that a new watch simply takes my breath away with its boldness, its ambition, its comfort, and its beauty! But this watch does all of those things and more. I’ve been a long-time fan of @formexwatch — a small independent Swiss watch brand with a focus on innovation, design, and value. They deliver truly innovative cases and bracelets and push the envelope on interesting materials and constructions and very approachable prices. But what we have here truly changes the game. When I saw their CEO, Raphael Granito, at the Windup Watch Fair in San Francisco earlier this year, he told me he had something interesting to share, and then he pulled out a prototype sample of this watch, the simply named “Aria”. It totally blew me away. What is it? Well it’s certainly an integrated bracelet sport watch, what has truly become well-trodden territory in the watch world. But they took this watch places no one else has gone. Let’s start with the case and bracelet. It’s 40mm in diameter and 6.9mm thin (!!!), weighing only 78g, crafted fully in Grade 5 Titanium, and with a supple and organic bracelet that wraps the wrist beautifully. It even has short pull-push micro-adjusts (3mm each) on either side of the butterfly clasp. Then there is the dial, like no other watch I’ve ever seen. It’s a deep dish shape with an entirely matte naturalistic and flowing look like a wind-swept landscape. The deep grey color of the dial is offset by golden hands and indexes with unexpected orange lume plots. It seems like it shouldn’t work, but it does, so well! It feels warm and cozy and fully envelopes you in its embrace. Finally (as if you needed more), there’s the movement, developed in close collaboration with movement supplier @horageswiss (another innovative disrupter in the Swiss watchmaking world). It’s a COSC-certified chronometer with a tungsten micro-rotor, a silicon hairspring and escapement, and a 72-hour power reserve. It has wonderful industrial decoration that fits this watch perfectly. Now I’ll let my photos (and video) do the rest of the talking!

Back home again and greeting Monday with a bit of a blast from the recent past. As the pandemic hit in early 2020, I discovered both the planned @horageswiss Tourbillon 1 (which had its own interesting journey to market) as well as the existing Autark 10 Years limited edition, celebrating 10 years of their in-house developed K1 movement. This Autark was the first to arrive and was truly a revelation with its super strong, light and smooth hardened titanium case and integrated bracelet, and striking vertically-brushed anthracite dial. With the applied numerals and the different indications (big date, small seconds, colorful power reserve), it’s a classic Horage watch with its own idiosyncratic (and memorable) look unique to the brand. This watch fits my wrist like a glove. Once it’s on, I wonder why I ever take it off!
