Alas, the forecast gave us little hope, calling for rain and gray skies, but the mountain had other plans. Waterrock Knob erupted in molten yellows and burning orange, spilling over ridgelines already sinking into the deep blue dark of WNC, and for a few unforgettable minutes it felt like the whole sky was on fire just for us. I cannot thank my friend, Andre, enough for the camaraderie on this venture, chasing light with someone who loves it as much as I do makes every climb worth it.

A couple of weeks ago, I ventured out with my friend, Andre, and a couple of new friends from Conserving Carolina, Rose and Kiko. We went into Headwaters State Forest for a morning trek to this magnificent waterfall that Kiko suggested.

On the drive, we saw deer and turkey along the road. In the lot, we were immediately treated to a baby hawk that Kiko spotted. And at the waterfall, we got to try some wild grapes, which had a bit more of a tangy and spicy kick than I'd ever imagined.

Sidenote: I don't understand the hesitation in woodland photography to show the sky. I love showing the sky in my work. It can add such a magical element to the background that contrasts the tonality of the midground and foreground. And when light is spilling through like in this waterfall scene, it's almost a necessity that I include the sky. It's part of the scene and I never want to exclude it from participating in the photo.
