Looking seeing making thinking trying to understand photographs photographically
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Arthur Gee spent several decades in Uganda measuring land. First in colonial service, later as a self employed worker measuring land for the Baganda elite landlords. During the earlier years, ca. 1910, he produced a set of stereocards that his descendants allowed us to digitise and share. A souvenir drum that must be about a century old still features in their home. Animated stereo & stereocard show what appears to har been a hunters’ accommodation. Note the gramophone. OPEN SESSION — "A conversation on (re)framing as artistic gestures of care and their situated affordances" Guest Speakers GOPOLANG LEDWABA GUNDEGA STRAUBERGA Intro & Moderation ANDREA STULTIENS The notion of 'reframing' is often used in relation to (photo)archives. It is a play with the Frame that American curator John Szarkowski identified as one of five "characteristics and problems" particular to the medium of photography. The frame is also a central notion in Joanna Zylinska's 2023 book The Perception Machine. The frames, she states, are produced by 'us', but their "mechanical infrastructures" also frame us. Reframing implies that earlier 'frames' are insufficient and, indeed, 'a problem' and therefore need to be revisited. Research Fellow Andrea Stultiens studied a collection of photographs produced by a Scottish gardener who became a colonial botanist and subsequently forestry officer. The photographic frame and its reframing emerged along the way as an important thinking tool raising complex ethical questions. In this session Stultiens will be in conversation with Gopolang Ledwaba (SA) and Gundega Strauberga (LV) about their respective use of ‘frames’, both in a literal and proverbial or metaphorical sense. What does framing mean in their respective cultural contexts? How can the frame be appropriated as a subversive and empowering tool? And what is, consequentially, the potential of ‘reframing’ in their practices? — The event is free of charge, but registration is required. 🔗 Registration link in bio 📅 22 October 2026 ⏰ 5 pm – 6 pm (UK time) 📍 ARCHIVO (ZOOM) #archivo #researchlab #visualculture #visualarts #practiceledresearch •

“At the core of the earth It’s too hot to breathe There’s nothing much to eat And everybody leaves There’s a place in the forest Where the animals dance Carefree and joyous Like nobody’s watching And nobody’s watching, So they laugh and they dance around mahogany trees Completely unawares they’re gonna end up as meat And nobody’s watching …” @placeboworld - 🎶Try Better Next Time🎵. The one interested better be watching, … we the meat that eats, heh HEH!!! … Maybe some peace, satisfaction, or another kind of glory, … yes you can, … at a cost. Dismay, remorse, “the God desire” … costs companero, COSTS! Maybe you pose to enjoy the scene but an agent of denying assails you … maybe you focus to keep moving and woe you turn into tunnel vision … eat the ghosts in the tunnel and get a hunger that rings like unkind bells announcing your marauding NEED, … A busy crow comes to me with cryptic signal, reports about crawlers, “big opportunity if we move in now now” … “the situation is just emerging” says an involved kite, … a less jumpy sentinel favours void. Poof! The cookbook won’t do here, just don’t waste the ingredients or make a nuclear blend your vat won’t contain … Behold my visual hymn and *cease the day. Kesho! Unless the nightmares get real, blink and your children eat you. Is there another way?👺

The jewellery part of the #Omukama of #Tooro regalia is quite a statement. Imagine something like a lion’s claw worn as a necklace on elephant hair, a beads anklet worn on giraffe hair. In case someone doesn’t know, beads were once the bitcoin of most of Subsaharan Africa, in the slaving days, you could probably purchase a family and their friends with a haversack of certain beads! One time, people who identify as Ankole Kingdom, Kaaro Karungi back then, they got into a squabble with Bunyoro, that’s the Kingdom said to be located in the capital place of a greater empire network spanning SouthSudan, Somalia, Eastern Congo, Rwanda and Burundi, Western Kenya & Gikuyu land, Northern Tanzania; The Empire? Bunyoro Kitara or another name not remembered in writing today. #BunyoroKitara are said to have been set up by a mysterious kind of sophisticated people-like beings called #Bachwezi who were even capable of manipulating the planet’s engineering in that they could set up water ways, place rocks, etcetera. Back to the squabble, the Banyankore won cows and human resource from the trip, but what they were proud of most was a necklace-like object that supposedly could be used to change the weather. Rain making in particular. That object looks like this Tooro Omukama necklace. Colour Slides by Dr. A.T. Schofield.
The Collection is held at @makerere University Library, Africana Section, Paper Archives. Reproduced by @andreastultiens - @hipuganda with kind permission. Some slides are dated, which makes it reasonable to assume that the whole set is made in the second half of the 1950s.
They were donated to the library by the family of the photographer Dr. A.T. Schofield, who worked in Uganda in the first half of the 20th century. There is much more to the Schofield collection and her grand daughter @miffytheartist is working enthusiastically to reconnect them to whence they were made. Such as her current work with Nalinya A. Nabaloga (@bumu.art.gallery_ ) and Batebe E. Bagaya … to be continued.

Soon, a new Omukama will be crowned in the Tooro Kingdom. In 1929, George Rukidi III was crowned Omukama of Tooro. My grandfather was working as a doctor in Uganda at the time, and his photographs capture glimpses of the royal court, ceremonies and people surrounding the kingdom. He also invited the Toro royal family to visit him in Ireland Now, as Tooro prepares for another coronation, these photographs take on a new resonance. I am continuing to research my grandfather’s photographs of Uganda and their connections between Ireland and the Tooro Kingdom, exploring colonial photography, memory, authorship and the stories that archives preserve — and those they leave untold. I was honoured to show the recently digitised cinefilm of her father's wedding & coronation to Princess Elizabeth Bagaya just this year. It would be wonderful to follow in my grandfather's footsteps and record this coronation too... **Two coronations. Almost 100 years apart. One archive connecting them.** #TooroKingdom #RukidiIII #ColonialPhotography #PhotographicArchive #DecolonisingArchives
