Lighting Trends 2027 are redefining how interiors are experienced.
At Cartier Vienna, interior designer Laura Gonzalez shows how decorative lighting can become part of the architecture itself — shaping atmosphere, identity and visual rhythm.

From sculptural chandeliers to integrated illumination, lighting is moving beyond function and becoming one of the defining elements of luxury interiors.

Statement lighting is becoming one of the strongest interior design trends for 2027.
Sculptural pendants and chandeliers are no longer simply sources of light — they are focal points that define the room, create drama and influence the entire architectural composition.

In luxury bathrooms, lighting is increasingly treated almost like functional art.

Layered lighting will be essential to luxury interiors in 2027.
At The St. Regis Hong Kong, André Fu combines statement lighting, warm ambient sources and architectural illumination to create depth, rhythm and atmosphere.

The result shows why successful lighting design is no longer about one fixture — it is about how multiple layers of light work together.

Wall lights are becoming architectural features in their own right.
In 2027, sconces and decorative wall lighting are moving beyond accent illumination, creating rhythm, symmetry and dramatic patterns across interior surfaces.

In bathrooms and private retreats, they add intimacy while giving walls a stronger visual identity.

Some of the most sophisticated lighting trends for 2027 are almost invisible.
In Neri&Hu’s Sculpted Light · New Shanghai Theatre, concealed perimeter lighting and integrated linear sources merge directly with the architecture.

Instead of decorating the space, light defines volume, e Luxury Cartier Vienna boutique interior designed by Laura Gonzalez, featuring a sculptural amber chandelier, floral wall art, illuminated display cases and warm layered lighting.

For André Fu, design begins with the experience of moving through a space. Across 25 years, his work has explored atmosphere, cultural dialogue and the ways travel can shape how we understand place.

In this feature, he reflects on the ideas behind his new book, André Fu: A Designer’s Vision, from escape and heritage to the importance of experiencing a culture first-hand. He also shares how travel, technology and changing patterns of behaviour continue to influence his approach to hospitality design.

From drawing mazes as a child to designing hotels, restaurants and cultural spaces around the world, Fu’s practice remains rooted in curiosity, observation and the human experience of space.

ONE HANAZONO VILLAS

✨ Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto - 250 years of history ✨

I step through the Kajiimiya Gate, built in 1703, and into @hotel_the_mitsui_kyoto. Beside Nijo Castle, I’m walking through a place the Mitsui family called home for more than 250 years.

In the garden reimagined by Shunsaku Miyagi, stones and lanterns from the former residence remain part of the landscape. Architecture and nature become one, following the Japanese idea of “teioku ichinyo”.

Inside, @andrefustudio reinterprets Japanese simplicity through natural materials and views that bring the garden indoors.

Then, the suite. More private residence than hotel room. I love the sculptural wooden table, the long window seat, the soft light and the stone bathtub.

But my favourite place remains the living room. I could sit there for hours, with Kyoto framed beyond the windows.

Last week, @hotel_the_mitsui_kyoto was awarded Three @michelinguide Keys for the third consecutive year. ✨

FROM SKETCH TO ICON — André Fu × Upper House Hong Kong

How does a hotel become a global design reference?

At Upper House Hong Kong, André Fu created a new expression of luxury hospitality: residential rather than monumental, calm rather than excessive, and deeply connected to material, light and place.

As André Fu Studio marks 25 years, we look beyond the finished interiors to explore the sketches, spaces and ideas behind one of Hong Kong’s defining design destinations.

A story of hospitality design, creative process and quiet luxury — from sketch to icon.

BEHIND THE ICON — Early Ideas, A Lasting Vision

Before experiencing the finished spaces, there were drawings.

As part of André Fu’s 25-year celebration, 25 original sketches for Upper House are displayed at the hotel’s Sky Bridge, offering a rare look at the creative thinking behind the project. Some of the material revisits ideas dating back to 2006.

The drawings reveal something that finished photography cannot: how proportion, movement, atmosphere and human connection begin to take shape long before a space is built.

THE UPWARD JOURNEY — A Hotel Designed Like a Private Home

Upper House Hong Kong was conceived by André Fu as a tranquil residential retreat above the intensity of the city.

Warm timber, natural limestone, an understated palette and carefully framed views shape an experience where luxury is expressed through calm rather than excess.

Even its name becomes part of the architecture: an upward journey into a quieter world above Hong Kong.

QUIET LUXURY — Designed to Feel, Not to Impress

Long before “quiet luxury” became a global design conversation, Upper House was exploring a more restrained idea of hospitality.

Natural materials, generous proportions and carefully controlled light create spaces that feel intimate and residential rather than theatrical. Upper House itself describes the hote Editorial cover featuring André Fu seated inside a contemporary Upper House Hong Kong interior overlooking Victoria Harbour, introducing a story about his 25-year design journey.

A modern architectural masterpiece, with its striking sails-like structure soaring above Hyde Park Corner, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 could almost be mistaken for a super yacht moored in the middle of London.

One of the last projects completed by the late Richard Rogers, an extraordinary glass and steel structure houses the capital’s first all suite hotel, with 61 spread across nine floors. Champalimaud Design, André Fu, Pierre Yves Rochon and Patricia Urquiola each designed two floors, meaning a return visit can offer an entirely different stay experience.

Beyond the sumptuous suites, at Jean Georges Vongerichten’s ABC Kitchens, Damien Hirst artworks share space with a vertical glass wine cellar, polished copper and Rosso Orobico marble.

Atop the hotel, two glass pavilions house a stunning rooftop bar and a cigar lounge, complete with retractable roofs and knockout panoramas. And the hotel’s members’ club for wellbeing and longevity, Surrenne, spread over four subterranean floors, encompasses a 22-metre indoor lap pool, well-equipped gym, sauna and steam room.

Bold, glamorous and architecturally unlike any other London hotel, read more about The Emory on page 45 of the Twelfth Anniversary Edition of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳, via the link in our bio.
