I’m back from 10 beautiful days in Berkeley with family to remember and celebrate the life of our wonderful tío Germán who was taken from us very unexpectedly and suddenly after Christmas.

He was the best. And he’ll be remembered for so many excellent things. I had no idea he was involved in the architectural design of San Francisco airport - next time you’re there, check out the roof. I did know that he loved cars, tennis, dancing, and - very importantly - postres. His clever restaurant hack was to look at the dessert options first and place that order before anything else should his choice run out.

But mostly, I’ll remember him for making my mum laugh so very much. Without fail they’d be in fits of giggles whenever they were together. It breaks my heart that she can’t call him for their regular charlas.

I’m so grateful that I could be in California to be part of his memorial and hang out with my cousins on hikes, city visits, and endless good food and conversations. I even got a new cousin! The glorious sunshine was a total bonus. #family #unclesrock

This year, California will mark March 31 as Farmworkers Day instead of Cesar Chavez Day. The top agricultural state in the U.S. officially renamed the holiday in the wake of sexual abuse allegations against the labor icon Chavez. Fellow labor leader Dolores Huerta came forward in a New York Times investigation earlier this month along with two other women, both of whom were minors at the time of the alleged abuse. In 2013, Huerta spoke to FRONTLINE for "Rape in the Fields," which examines the hidden price that many migrant women working in fields and packing plants in the U.S. pay to stay employed and provide for their families. Words cannot describe how sad it is to lose Joan Bieder, my professor at UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. I started the school fresh from China 23 years ago, knowing very little contexts about the U.S., let alone how to tell stories in the country. I was nervous and worried. Looking back, I so appreciate Joan was always kind but never treated me any different. She showed me what the standards to be a broadcast journalist and she continued to show her care and investment in me over the 20 years after I graduated.

When I just saw her in May in Berkeley, she asked me, what you benefited most from the j-school. I am glad I told her that it was the values I learned to be a journalist from knowing who she is. Joan Bieder, you will be forever missed, love you…

“We Still Love Here” is a short documentary told through the eyes of die-hard fans, capturing the final home game of the Oakland A’s in intimate detail. What a @sffilm ! Another sold out screening and the audience’s continued poppin responses are the best gifts we can ever wish for!

Huge shout out to the festival team to host a special TDG educational screening for the local high schoolers! Besides that part that I was approached and “pranked” by more than 15 high school boys with the same pickup line from the film to get my WeChat, which was quite confusing to me, we’d proudly proven @datinggamemovie to have an even younger appeal!

I am always conscious not to burden friends by requesting meetups. But it was truly beautiful and meaningful to have reconnected with all of you in the Bay Area! Those of you in Toronto, coming to you for @hotdocs_ as our next stop April 30 to May 2nd!

Thank you my teammates @betsyrtsai @bewilderfilm @theresaxtine to make this trip unforgettable indeed!

As academic freedom and journalism are both under attack, it’s so emotional for me to return to the same room I learned filmmaking 101 twenty years ago and talk to the current doc class at @berkeleyjournalism.

Poster of Debra Hoffman’s Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter is still up on the wall, but accompanied by alums’ work like @petenicks’ brilliant Homeroom. Journalism is more important than ever as much as I know one day, their work will be spotlit on that wall too.

Friday screening of @datinggamemovie is sold out. In case anyone still needs a ticket pls ping me or @betsyrtsai.

Turned 30 in 2024, made new friends, lost some friends, deepened with those who dared; made work I’m proud of, made work I’m not so proud of, found my voice, been scared as the industry faltered; built community, leaned on community; found the healthiest relationship I’ve ever been in, learned so much about myself. A year for moving fast, a year for moving slow, dissociating a lil, and finding myself again. What a gift!!

I adore these people with all my heart. They got me through 2024 and they can get me through anything!!!

Happy Ass Birthday (late) to the dancing queen @nivesomitutu ! You are a shining beacon of black dance, black art, black thought and just blackity blackness in general. The one who elevates everything to a higher degree or level. The educated one (hello DOCTOR). The one who can either side eye your foolishness or join in and make it more fun. The collector of n-glets, the maker of all the things and creator of beautiful things, beautiful experiences and beautiful people. You are a gracious host who entertains body, mind and spirit. Coming through with the Capricorn spirit of I wish somebody would, yes please on the fancy fun and with a side serving of leave me the f*ck alone, you are an exquisite being. Your light shines bright in this world of trials, tribulations and trifling people. In this new year of you, I wish you lovely things, peace and quiet, long restful naps, creative inspiration, inspiration, cozy weekends and as always and forever, LOVE! You my Capricorn Queen are deserving!!!!
