Exclusive Video Premiere | ”The easy path today becomes the harder one tomorrow,” I once read — and there’s a lot of truth in that. Sometimes there comes a moment when running no longer works, even if you want it to. A point where you’re forced to stop, turn inward, and face what’s been left unresolved. To ask difficult questions. To take responsibility. And, perhaps, to choose a new way forward.

With “Monsters,” @majikisreal opens the door to that space. Taken from his upcoming EP Between Worlds, the track reflects years spent avoiding parts of himself in order to keep the peace — until that strategy quietly collapsed. “I spent years avoiding parts of myself to keep the peace, until that stopped working and I had to face patterns I’d ignored and let go of an identity that no longer fit. The song isn’t about dwelling on the past,” he shares, “but about recognising the power it can have over you and taking responsibility for change. Writing it felt like a necessary reset, a way of acknowledging what was there without staying trapped in it, and moving forward with a clearer sense of who I am.”

The accompanying video directed by @andyaaagh mirrors this confrontation with striking restraint.

Digging more fun stuff out of the archives. Less of a stroll, this one is a bit of a stolen Corsa joyride doing 80 down memory lane. Back in late July 2021, during the second wave of the Covid pandemic, I got a call from @danmassiephoto about ‘air sharing’. I asked if he actually meant Airdrop, and suggested that, while somewhat old-fashioned, sometimes just attaching the file to an email could be a more reliable method, or, mobile connectivity allowing, proposed perhaps sending as an iMessage, which wouldn’t incur any additional data spend. It turned out he was actually calling about Ed Sheeran- way more exciting admittedly, but my points were still totally valid and I think he took them onboard.

We had a pretty tight brief- we had Ed for five hours, during which time we were to film four acoustic live sessions and an interview for Japanese TV. My memory of the planning is all a bit fuzzy now, and it doesn’t help that my notes were usually taken on the backs of envelopes, but without much hesitation I dived right in. The musical setup was explained to me- it would be full band; drums, upright bass, piano, and two acoustics, and backing singers… but everyone would sing- and I still kept giving a thumbs up- perhaps my thumb had gotten stuck. In my excitement, I sold Dan on recording Ed’s performance on hidden mics,
having had recent success on another project, with the fallback that we could use a stage mic setup and DI the guitar if it wasn’t working out.

Reflecting on one of my funnest days at work this #throwbackthursday. On a Tuesday, late November 2023, I woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head and climbed up to the top of the o2 arena with @danmassiephoto @richard.buffy.dunton.dop (happy birthday!) @andreeagruioniu and @andyaaagh to film a live performance with all round top banana, pun master and generational talent, @jacobcollier . It was such a fun challenge for so many reasons! We only had a 30 minute window during which we had to shoot the performance as well as a trailer for the o2 show. We could only bring minimal kit that could be carried on our backs or clipped to the safety rail on the way up/down. And it was close to freezing to boot. At my end, I was aiming to capture the performance without any visible mics, but without being able to pre-rig anything, a lot of thinking on my feet was required.

When Jacob arrived the first thing I did was rig his guitar with a DPA4060 into a Wisycom MTP41 which sat at the bottom of his guitar. To capture his voice, I had designs for a hair rig, or to sneak a mic into the buff he was wearing, but in a double edged sword stroke of luck, it was so cold that Jacob borrowed a hat at the last minute which made life a bit easier as I was able to hide a DPA6061 just inside the brim for ideal forehead placement. The brown ursa fur circle used for wind protection was nigh on a perfect match for his hair colour- let me know if you can spot the mic! Given that there was no margin for error, I also decided to record into a tentacle sync track-E at 32 bit, before feeding through to another Wisycom transmitter. Ambience was captured with a Cinela Albert housing an LCR array of sennheiser 8040 mics.

The improvised performance was captured in one take (he clearly knew what he was doing!) - however we had have a plane fly right overhead- at the 00:30 mark you can see Jacob look up at it. By the end of the take, Jacob’s fingers were so cold it didn’t look like we’d get another one, but having done my fair shareof audio post and cleanup, I was confident that we’d be able to overcome the noise.
