When I took this portrait of Andy Goldsworthy on the hill near his house I wanted to have him looking to one of his works with in the same low, but strong side light I'd worked with photographing the work of art - the natural light was coming from behind so we needed some front fill flash - this picture was produced entirely in camera and on medium format film. I deeply enjoy photographing his artwork in different countries and have particularly enjoyed his incredible contribution to arts and culture in his home country Scotland. There is an interesting set of his woks @jupiter.artland near Edinburgh and lots of lovely books on his work available online.

Andy Goldsworthy: Red Flags, a thought provoking site-specific exhibition on view at Fort Mason’s Gateway Pavilion in partnership with Fort Mason Art. Marking the West Coast debut of Goldsworthy’s installation Red Flags (2020), the exhibition features fifty 5 x 8-foot flags, each stained red with earth collected from one of the fifty US states. Originally hung in New York’s Rockefeller Center, the flags’ presentation at Fort Mason coincides with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, reflecting on geographic and political boundaries, and on the ties between people, land, and nation.

it’s only week 3 of the behavioural sculpture installation and already the torus forms are beginning to change.

What originally presented as resolved geometry — centred, tensioned, coherent structures — is now slowly adapting under gravity, weather exposure and material fatigue. The forms are elongating. Fibres are separating. Tension is redistributing unevenly across the system.

What interests me is that the toruses are not uniformly collapsing. Some sections hold, some distort, some tighten as others loosen. Some redistribute force while others begin to unravel.

This is exactly what #complexsystems do.

And as humans — ourselves tension-bearing systems — we instinctively read coherence and incoherence in form. We recognise stability, fatigue, imbalance and strain long before we consciously articulate them.

The work is beginning to feel #psychologically alive because it is no longer operating only as object or geometry. It is behaving.

Watching the structures shift over time has started to evoke something familiar: the feeling of interacting with overloaded systems — institutional, ecological, relational or internal. The sensation of trying to maintain integrity while forces redistribute around you.

#TracingSystems was never intended as a fixed sculpture. It is a live behavioural structure unfolding through duration, pressure and environmental exposure.

The question now is not “what does it represent?” but:

What does it feel like to witness a system gradually losing coherence while still trying to hold itself together?

Icicle Wall by Andy Goldsworthy, 2024.
Ice sculpture on a wall.
200 x 60 x 15 cm.

Andy Goldsworthy is an artist with many labels: environmental artist, nature artist, land artist, site-specific sculptor, and so on. One thing is for sure, Andy works very close with nature.
Nature is both his inspiration and his medium. From his creative process, he understands that nature is always changing.
"Change never bothers nature. In fact, change is the key to understand nature." Andy said.

Andy often plays with these two things (nature and change) in his artistic practice.
In this Icicle Wall, for example, Andy made a sculpture from ice and put it in his backyard in 2024's winter.
Just in two days, the ice sculpture melted and disappeared from it's place, leaving behind a memory that physical things do not last forever.

This is not the only time Andy has worked like this. So far, he has made more than 7000 artworks that we can only enjoy for a short moment before the materials blend back into nature. Arrangements of leaves in a puddle, snowballs in the middle of the city, very fragile rock constructions, and even the silhouette of his body lying on the ground are often used as mediums for his temporary art. Most of these artworks are not even documented. "Don't forget that everything is temporary." That is basically his message.

Furthermore, Andy's practice opposes the convention of the art world. While galleries encourage collectors to keep as many artworks as possible, and museums rush to monumentalize the achievements of great artists, Andy creates art that celebrates impermanence.

Andy Goldsworthy inspires a lot of artists. One of them is my friend, Ann-Christine Racette ( @ac.racette ). You can go back and read a commentary of Ann-Christine's work titled Marine, which also dwells with temporarity, in my previous post.

Spring Garden refresh part 2:

Lilacs and Peonies starting to bloom. An Andy Goldsworthy inspired border frames the garden. This was created out of a dead Magnolia tree and has survived the harsh winter. I’m looking forward to seeing its evolution as the garden matures this year.

Looking forward to seeing how this outdoor room evolves.

Are people interested is seeing the evolution of this garden?

At Wildhut, we draw inspiration from art, design, and the natural world.

A recent visit to ‘Andy Goldsworthy: Fifty Years’ in Edinburgh was a powerful reminder of how these elements are endlessly connected.

Goldsworthy’s work reveals the quiet beauty of nature, materials, and place… the same values that shape every Wildhut luxury sauna. From the curve of the timber, to the way light settles on warm surfaces, our designs are rooted in the landscapes that inspire us.

Discover the beauty behind each Wildhut yourself, visit our website via the link in bio.
