STATES of UNCERTAINTY is open. @h.artslane Gallery

‘Normality in a Broken System examines life under an economic and social order widely recognised as unjust, exploitative, and unequal, yet repeatedly defended as unavoidable. Bringing together artists from around the world, the exhibition explores how inequality is lived and felt through bodies, time, labour and space.’

Thank you to curators @Alisonvetters and @ellasheltawy for bringing together such a wonderful group of artists and hanging a great show. I was struck by the diversity of responses to the brief and the sense of urgency which charged the space.

Here are a selection of works from the show.

In a world where capitalism is out of control and change feels just out of reach, life goes on. But can we continue living in outrage, and who bears the cost if we do?

Andy Grinham’s art explores hedonistic alternate realities where collective joy trumps individualism, creating portals into nightlife’s darker pleasures through installations using found materials like weathered wood, deteriorated carpets, and recycled plastic. His recent works feature unsettling forms: 700 rubber tongues waggling, dismembered spray-painted mannequins, deflated sex dolls in Perspex boxes, and analog computers pierced by pink lasers. He’s fascinated by threshold-crossing between real and imagined worlds, studying altered states and the politics of spaces where we lose ourselves in crowds. His practice seeks raw materiality that mirrors our underground escapes from capitalist ideology.

Celebrating the opening of the group exhibition "Annual Leave"!

Congratulations to all the exhibiting artists and to Alison Hand (BA (hons) Fine Art Programme Leader) and Simon Yates (artist and Art Academy alumni) on co-curating the incredible show at our Bankside Campus Gallery.

Inspired by Michel Foucault’s concept of Heterotopias, the exhibition explores imagined worlds, shifting hierarchies, and the space between the absurd and the profound.

Featuring works by:
Kirsten Glass, Poppy Whatmore, Simon Yates, Frances Richardson, Julian Wild, Andy Grinham, Alison Hand, and Office for Subversive Architecture

🗓️ Exhibition dates: 21st – 30th May (Mon–Sat, 9am–5pm)
📍 Art Academy London, Bankside Campus, SE1 9BL (Closed on Bank Holiday)

Swing by our gallery and check out the fantastic array of work!
