all food tells a story. of its history. it speaks of migration, of movement, of moment, of momentousness, of monsters, of mayhem, of mystical magical imaginings from those who carried seed on purpose or accident.

how are the arid hills of Greece, with their endless library of islands, covered in a cacti and its seed fruit, we associate with ‘the new world’? the finicky ferocious fruit of thorny skin and crunchy dangerous seeds, flesh like lovely water - only a whisper of taste beyond texture.

who are these fruits of cacti? elusive like their flowers blooming quietly and quickly, often in the dead of night for no one to see but the moon’s faerie light. (dragon fruit born from a moonflower/ Queen of the Night.)

and how come these exact cactus, with same fruit, similar flavour, grown in Mexico and South America have blood red interiors like beet?

the landscape of these islands in Greece are covered in hardy delicate herb bushes, white dust-dirt covered fig trees fighting for water with the cloudless skies.

a person desperate for water, battles thorns to reach a sweetish flesh, or carries them on a ship or smuggles them amongst barrels of wine & grain.

/did you know - some seeds float and travel thousands of miles until tides take a turn to shores, and they find a sandy forest to call home again?

build a nest: create community.

i think we’re all connected. borders are arbitrary and have nothing to do with anything but a power grab.

the equators are the only lines. but they’re a circle.

and in that circle, we can choose to create, destroy, propagate or learn.

patience rewarded with late summer bounty: peaches and pluots from a stop in Auburn @ikedasbakery added to tomatoes and figs (so many types of figs!) from a visit to @andysorchard in Morgan Hill. barely dressed in white fruity balsamic and lemon olive oil and a crown of burrata. shared as a complete dinner for two. #californiagrown☀️

we are approaching the end of peach season… 🥲

fortunately, i was lucky enough to open pinecone right in the middle of the season of my favorite fruit. farmers at the market had been telling us that the season started earlier this time around. no complaints there obviously, but that usually means it ends earlier.

for the past couple of years, i’ve kicked off peach season with the earlier freestone varieties from regier family farms, moved on to andy’s orchard, and eventually wrapped up with tenerelli’s late season varieties, sometimes stretching all the way into october!

but this year, everyone had a shorter season, especially tenerelli 🥲

so here we are. we’re running through the last variety from regier for the year, and the last stash of yellow peaches from andy’s that we carefully saved for our fuzzy fizz. after that we will have a bit more from g farms but that’s pretty much the end of it!

ngl, i’m feeling very bittersweet with pinecone finally opening. we’ve been hearing more and more from farmers about how hard it is to find people to pass the torch to, and how difficult it is to keep doing what they do when their practices aren’t profit first.

with some farmers selling their land because of that, it breaks my heart to see the end of their amazing produce and their farming traditions. what a great run and privilege it is to work with these farmers❤️

as much as i want this season to last forever, we’re at the end of it, and so are the peaches.

come grab a peach earl grey tart or one last fuzzy fizz while you can 🍑🥺

We’ve known of Andy’s plans for a while, but seeing it in writing is bittersweet.

Andy is a wizard at farming, known for his unique fruits, outstanding quality and maintaining the long-standing presence of Mariani-grown produce in the Santa Clara Valley. We’ve partnered with Andy for over 45 years, ever since my dad and uncles operated their roadside fruit stands in Morgan Hill, and customers still call us months ahead to reserve a box of Andy’s heirloom Blenheim apricots. 🌳

It’s been a pleasure and an honor for me to learn from the best. I admire how Andy is a steadfast source of produce-industry insight and expertise, and he always took the time to let me pick his brain.

Congratulations, Andy, on all your achievements. Our crew and customers truly appreciate what a treat your produce is and knowing that the farm is downsizing has made every cherry, apricot and other treasure that much sweeter. We're glad to hear you'll continue to grow some fruit nearby, and that @andysorchard plans to sell tree-ripened produce as long as you're able. 😊

This just makes us sad. We knew this day was coming. For a few years now. Andy and our dad have been friends for decades. He relied on Andy for his perspective, his expertise. He still loves to stop by for a chat. And, we understand. This is not a money making venture. It’s unfortunate that we do not value agricultural land enough for a tax incentive. For common sense regulations around what a farm can do to stay afloat. For less expensive water. For the ability to pass land to the next generation without being re assessed. Perhaps our county leaders will see the value of the last sacred acres that remain in this valley. The most fertile soil in the world does not need any more virgin land turned into housing. Let’s put our focus on things that matter to our culture, our heritage, our future. In the meantime, Godspeed Andy on your next adventure. #andysorchard #valleyofheartsdelight #thankafarmer 💚💚💚
