Come join CAPAS and PASU at the Grove House on Friday, April 17, from 5-6pm for a virtual talk on the history and implications of the ABG subculture in shaping the community and politics of Asian American college students.

Since 2018, the Asian Baby Girl (ABG) has been stereotyped as a conventionally attractive Asian American college student who loves boba, raving, and partying within Asian American social circles. However, the ABG also has roots in 1990s Southeast Asian gang culture and the import car scene. The evolving conversation around ABGs reveals how Asian American young adults both internalize and critique aesthetics of an Asian American identity enmeshed in the logics of neoliberalism and the model minority.

I performed the latest version of my multimedia presentation “Asian futures, without Asians” to a full theater at Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts a few weeks ago. I’m so proud of this project and how much it’s developed, and hope to have the opportunity to perform it again.

Since its debut as an online Zoom presentation during the height of the pandemic, I’ve updated and refined the script and imagery to respond to current events and my continued research into science fiction and cultural heritages across Asia, collaborated with musician Tammy Lakkis to develop a live soundtrack, and enlisted local stylists to create futuristic Asian styling — this time with a costume by Stephanie Gancayco and hair & makeup by Carla Grace Fajardo (/7; more about this soon!). I incorporated animation and, with the help of Lyds Cope-Arguello, lighting effects, and have learned soo much about performance and my own abilities with every iteration.

The performance was followed by a conversation with Racial Worldmaking author Mark Jerng (/4 by @angeltrazo), and sponsored by @ucdasa, @mellonfoundation Affirming Multivocal Humanities Grant & @mondavicenter.

Huge thanks to Susette Min and Mark Jerng for inviting me; the entire Mondavi team, especially Jeremy Ganter, Rob Tocalino, Holly McNeill, Daniel Villegas, Ricky Wai Kit Tam, and Ezekiel; and everyone who waited to talk to me afterwards or sent a sweet message. 💝

Drawing by audience member Francine Guerrero during the discussion (/5)!
