Man oh man, Miami 🌴🔥

South Florida is a special place… the culture, the food, the botanical life and CRAZY wildlife that makes itself home in this Hot and humid climate. ☀️ 🌿🦜

And it’s a place I feel everyone should explore at least once!! 🦎

I got the privilege to visit for the first time this past weekend and bring fishing to kids down in Miami with @anglersforconservation 😁 🎣

And once the kiddos got their fish catching in, my good friend @the_salty_mermaid808 and I hit the canals searching for some Peacock Bass! 🦚

Thanks to the freshest shiners I’ve ever seen from @jdoutdooradventures We found a few to get Alisa her first one!! 🔥🙌🏻

And with putting in close to 1,300 miles in 3 days for this trip, there’s so much I still want to explore in Miami but it was worth every second and I’m already planning my next Trip! 🌴🦜❤️

Fishing is something that is close in our hearts @forgedbywater and what’s more important than catching said fish is if your not going to harvest that fish to give it a healthy and quality release for it to be caught and enjoyed by the next generation

🐟 A fishery doesn't collapse when the last fish is caught.

It collapses when the next generation stops arriving. 🎣🎣🎣

Groupers and snappers pack their entire year of reproduction into a few days, at a few known sites. Fish that window, and you're not just taking fish — you're taking the next generation before it exists.

The numbers don't lie:
🔴 Nassau grouper down 80%+ since 1980 — now Critically Endangered
🔴 One Belize aggregation: ~15,000 fish in the 1970s → 925 in 2018

But protection works:
🟢 Cayman Islands protected their spawning aggregations starting in 2003 — and tripled one population by 2018

The science is clear, and a plan already exists....

...but what's missing is enforcement.

Protect the spawn. Protect the future. 🌊

August is National Fishing Month, and while we hope you never find yourself in this situation, knowing what to do if you accidentally hook wildlife can make all the difference.

If you accidentally hook a sea turtle:
• Do not cut the line.
• Do not reel the sea turtle up onto the pier.
• If at a state park, alert pier staff and call the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-3922 so a permitted sea turtle rescue team can respond.

If you accidentally hook a bird, the response is different—which is why it’s important to know the correct steps for each species before heading out to fish.

A few minutes of knowledge can save a life. Watch the video to learn the proper response, and share it with a fellow angler to help protect Florida’s wildlife.

Discarded fishing line and tackle continue to be one of the greatest threats to our local sea turtles. This year alone, 18% of the sea turtles rescued by Coastal Connections have been victims of entanglement. Our two most recent rescues, Falafel and Liberty, were transported to East Coast Zoological Foundation’s Sea Turtle Healing Center at @brevardzoo for treatment and rehabilitiation.

How you can help:
• Pack out your used fishing line.
• Recycle it in one of our 49 fishing line recycling tubes across Indian River County.
• Never leave nets, hooks, or tackle behind.

If you encounter an entangled sea turtle, DO NOT remove the line yourself. The line may be preventing severe bleeding or holding an injured limb in place. Instead, call FWC for further instruction.

Want to make an even bigger impact? Adopt a Fishing Line Recycling Tube to help keep this program running. Email olivia@coastal-connections.org to learn more.

Your actions have consequences - every piece of fishing line you dispose of properly could save a sea turtle’s life.

All sea turtle work performed under FWC-MTP #259 & #279
