the aunties
the sisters
the mothers
the women who came before us

and the ones who arrive along the way

perhaps that was always the real magic of the owens women

not the spells

but the way they kept choosing each other

tag a woman you’d want in your coven 🕯️

some women come into our lives and somehow end up belonging to our children too

the ones who know their little quirks
who cheer the loudest
who show up
who love them simply because they’re ours

there’s something really beautiful about choosing your village
and watching your children inherit it

tag the auntie your babies got lucky enough to inherit

and if you’re new here, hi i’m Danielle 🤎 an Australian writer with one foot in practicality and the other in magic

sometimes she’s your sister

sometimes she’s the woman you met at twenty seven
the mum you found at school pickup
the friend who walked into your life during a hard season
or the woman who somehow just knew

and somewhere along the way
she became family

send this to your Gilly

maybe this is why i homeschool

because i’ve always believed
some of the most important things
our children will ever learn

happen around the kitchen table
in the garden
with their hands in the flour

while we’re busy calling it life

seeing life through a magical lens means
you get to become a little childlike again

you stop caring quite so much about how it looks
and start caring about how it feels

and maybe not everyone will understand it

i don’t really care anymore

i care about how my children feel
i care about how i feel

i care that childhood still feels like childhood here

because choosing a path that looks different can be lonely

especially when there isn’t a well-worn road to follow

but somewhere along the way
we found our village

a place where children are free to be children

where they learn as they grow
explore the wonder of their own backyards
make potions from flowers
ask a thousand questions
and still believe there might be something magical hiding amongst the ordinary

where food is passed around
stories are shared in circles
mothers gather
children wander between us
and nobody is in too much of a hurry to call them back

i don’t really have a name for what we’re doing

maybe you do

all i know is that when i look around at this little life we’ve created

it looks an awful lot like a magical childhood to me

From Egg to Coop – Part 3

Watching these eggs go from incubation to hatching was something special for our whole family. It was our first time using an incubator and we had an 80% hatch rate — a huge win!

Half the chicks were hand-raised under a heat lamp, while the rest were raised naturally by one of our broody hens. Every single chick made it through the early stages, and now they’re all grown and living together in the coop.
