"wànashkobàsh is a wetland, soft ground flooding with water; a situation of overwhelming entanglement; and something squishy, cushy, and springy."

This summer, Cai delved into the enchanting realm of wetlands, uncovering their essential role in our ecosystem. Their journey inspired this year's Bentwood Box, decorated with stunning wetland plants and featuring a pouch of sagebrush harvested from Nlaka’pamux and Syilx territory. It symbolizes the delicate balance and intricate beauty of these vital ecosystems.

By participating in the 2024 Bentwood Box Charity, you can help young, passionate Indigenous Youth like Cai make a real difference in our world. Cai’s dedication to protecting and preserving wetlands is an inspiring example of how our youth can lead the way in environmental conservation. 🌿✨

This box is part of our annual charity auction in support of the Urban Native Youth Association! It is titled “wànashkobàsh (bog)” by Algonquin-Anishinaabe/Métis artist Cai Brown.

Here’s what Cai has to say:

“wànashkobàsh is a wetland, soft ground flooding with water; a situation of overwhelming entanglement; and something squishy, cushy, and springy.

I spent some time working in wetlands over the summer, learning about these complex ecosystems and all of the life that they sustain. Wetlands like swamps, marshes, fens, and bogs all provide homes for a wide variety of life throughout the year, playing a vital role in filtering and storing water, and capturing and storing carbon. However, they are becoming increasingly threatened and have become increasingly rare in densely populated areas.

This box is decorated with a mix of wetland plants that grow in places I call home. They include skunk cabbage, bog cranberry, pitcher plants, bog laurel, wapato, willow, rosy twisted-stalk, grass pink orchid, blueberry flowers, devil’s club, strawberry, and a round-leaf sundew on top. Inside is a pouch of sagebrush that I harvested from Nlaka’pamux and Syilx territory.

Being part of this event allows me to give back to the UNYA community who have been taking care of me for nearly a decade. I remember flipping through the books of bentwood boxes during one of my first visits to UNYA, so it’s wild to come full circle and be one of those artists making a cool box!”

-Cai Brown

You can bid on this box and others until December 7th. Link to our website in bio.

All proceeds are donated to @unyayouth

We are in LOVE 😍 with these new additions to the ArtMart Vending Machine.

Come browse artist Cai Brown’s (@anim0sh) incredible beadwork earrings and pins. They are absolutely gorgeous and listed at just $25.

Remember, each ‘ArtMart’ purchase helps to support artists too!

“Cai Brown (they/them) is a two-spirit artist of Algonquin-Anishinaabe, Métis, and mixed European ancestry who has been drawing and painting from a young age. The artwork Cai creates reflects their passion for nature and community, inspired by the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the beings within. They began learning to create beadwork in 2021 with help from their friends, using the medium as a way to remain connected with community and culture.”

‘ArtMart’ is organized in collaboration with our friends at the @the_alternator

I love wearing art!!!! Everyone is so creative and cool!!! Living and working around and with so many artists makes life so beautiful!!! 🤍🤍🤍🤍
The ring and the hair clip in the first few slides were made by such cool artists from the CJMC Spring craft fair this past weekend.
The ring is made with wire and beads !! so cool i’ve never imagined using the wire as a thread before !!
The hairclip was made by someone in Guatemala and brought here by a kind and lovely lady at the fair🤍
And of course the earrings are from a sweet friend of mine @anim0sh 🫶🫶🫶
unfortunately i forget the names of the people from the fair who i purchased these items from so im unable to tag them 😭😭😭
