Biggest Little Ultra - 100 Miler
2nd Place Overall
Emma got her first buckle! Honestly couldn’t have gotten this result without the support of @megannobee. Thank you for allowing me to train as much as I do, I love you! Lastly, @ann.trason it was an absolute pleasure to share time on the course! You are an inspiration and brought such amazing vibes when the race got tough ❤️

There is a huge benefit in knowing you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. When you look at a tough path ahead and realize someone else has already cleared the way, faced the hard times, and proved it could be done, it makes your own journey a lot less terrifying.

If you look at the big picture, running long distances is actually pretty rare. Most people in the world don’t run at all. Out of the people who do, only a small percentage ever train to finish a 26.2-mile marathon. And an even smaller group of people are willing to tackle a 100-mile race. Running a hundred miles takes an incredible amount of physical strength and mental toughness. It pushes your body and mind to their absolute limits.

Luckily, we don’t have to face those huge challenges completely in the dark. We get to learn from the runners who did it first.

Trailblazers like Ann Trason didn’t just run 100-mile races—she completely changed what people thought was possible in extreme sports, especially for women. She won the brutal Western States 100-mile race an amazing 14 times. She didn’t just win the women’s division; she frequently finished near the very top overall right alongside the fastest men, setting course records that stood for decades. Back when ultra-distance running didn’t have many guides or playbooks, she figured it out through hard work and determination.

Learning from pioneers like Ann shows us that our limits are often just things we make up in our heads. She proved how to respect the distance, listen to your body, and keep pushing forward when everything in you wants to quit. Every time we tie our running shoes and head out for a distance that scares us, we are building on what people like her accomplished. We can go farther today because they took those hard first steps before us.

I’m tired, I’m sore, I’m proud of myself and all those who challenged alongside me and before me!

🔥 Beyond the Miles: Grit, Gratitude, and Fire at Mile Madness 🔥

100 miles is never just about the distance. It’s about what you’re made of when your body is spent, your mind is tested, and the road demands everything you’ve got. This year’s Mile Madness Endurance Run was a true testament to resilience, community, and relentless drive.

A massive thank you to Brian Goldman (@runningwithoutinjuriesblog ). Thank you for creating such an unforgettable, high-energy experience and for giving me the distinct privilege of serving as a Race Ambassador for this race. Being part of the Mile Madness family and representing this incredible event means the world to me. 🙌

This race presented a challenge unlike any other. After grinding through 82.5 miles, I temporarily stepped away from the course to take on a whole different kind of endurance test: completing the physical agility test with the Roseville Fire Department for their new cadet program. Going straight from 82.5 ultra-miles into a firefighter agility test was pure trial by fire, and coming back to the track to finish strong required digging deeper than ever before. 🚒💨

To all of the amazing runners out on that course, thank you from the bottom of my heart. The constant support, high fives, late-night cheers, and genuine encouragement every single loop kept me moving when the fatigue hit hard. That spirit of lifting each other up is what makes this community unmatched.

I am endlessly proud of every single person who stepped up to the starting line this weekend. A very special shoutout to my parents… watching you both step up to the challenge, push through your own barriers, and give it everything you had was one of the proudest moments of the entire event. You inspire me every single day.

Mile Madness proved once again that when you surround yourself with an incredible support system and refuse to back down, there are no limits. Here’s to chasing bigger goals, serving others, and never stopping! 🏅🏃‍♂️💪

Congratulations @ann.trason

14 times @wser champion, she finished second overall many times in the race and won many other ultras outright beating all men and women back in the 80s and 90s, pioneering and shifting minds.

Despite the challenges of rheumatoid arthritis she continues to defy the odds.

Congratulations to Ann and all the athletes at ARFTA!

Joined Laz a lap around ARFTA. Worth coming in last and small ding to my Ultra signup score to get the opportunity. No pacers on the course and didn’t want Laz to be disqualified by his wife Sandra.😂

First time getting together with @kim.gottwald since @lastsoulultra and great to team up cheering runners at ARFTA battling through 94F.

Also, great to see @ann.trason and all the other runners for added inspiration climbing towards @bigdogbackyardultra World Championship.

Friends captured on film at this year’s Western States Endurance Run.

If you subscribe to @likethewindmag this month, you’ll get issue 50 in the mail next month. In that issue, there just might be more of my images captured with film in it.

Love all of you.

Ann Trason did not build her legend loudly.

She built it one brutal mile at a time.

In a sport that already asks too much, she made the extreme feel repeatable.

Western States records her 14th win in 2003 as the close of the greatest career in the race’s history. The American Ultrarunning Hall of Fame also records 14 Western States 100 wins and four Leadville Trail 100 wins.

That number is difficult to understand properly.

Fourteen wins at 100 miles.

Not on a flat, forgiving course.
Not in a race that lets you fake toughness.
Western States asks for heat, climbing, descending, patience and a mind that can survive the long quiet.

Then there was 1996.

Trason won Comrades in South Africa and then won Western States 100 less than two weeks later.

That is not just fitness.

That is durability.
Restraint.
Recovery.
Confidence without theatre.

Some runners need noise around them to feel powerful.

Ann Trason’s lesson is different.

Keep working.
Keep returning.
Keep proving it in places where excuses have nowhere to hide.

Quiet does not mean soft.

Sometimes quiet is what dominance sounds like.
