Our September speaker for #cmCURRENT is Benjamin Tarasewicz, subject of the book: “Benjamin Breaking Barriers: Autism – A Journey of Hope” 🌊

Benjamin has been speaking about breaking barriers of autism since the tender age of 17, providing in-depth information, inspirational stories, and tips for reaching out to people with “differences.”
He is an award-winning public speaker (honored with the Temple Grandin Award), a musician, and an actor - known to moves his audiences to both laughter and tears.

Benjamin has given a Tedx talk (The Power of Kindness and Friendship), was recently a keynote speaker at both the British School of Berlin and the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s annual autism conference in Baltimore, and is the subject of his mother’s prize-winning book: “Benjamin Breaking Barriers: Autism – A Journey of Hope”.

His message is one of hope and perseverance, and he inspires people in all walks of life to meet their personal challenges head on. As the fabric of society stretches to include a rising number of autism diagnoses, his call for compassion and awareness is vital.

“Benjamin Breaking Barriers - A Journey of Hope” is a memoir by Benjamin’s mother and one of our regular volunteers, Malva. THANK YOU for joining us last Friday for our 1ST BIRTHDAY + August #creativemornings event #cmNAKHLAH with Leah Brenner Clack @tinytrunx and artist Lio-Bravo Bumbakini @liobumba at @junkyardsocialclub 🎂

We celebrated an entire year of inspiring events in Boulder with:
🎉 Birthday cake and sweets from @sweetsistersbakeshopllc
🎉 Coffee from our first coffee sponsor @thecoffeeride
🎉 Year In Review art by our social media manager - Danielle Hartig @neuen.co
🎉 @whimsigopuzzles activity with illustrations by our community builder - Angelika Piwowarczyk @flora.illustration

We also welcomed a few businesses to set-up shop, chat with our attendees, and take part in our 30-second pitches:
⚡️ Ad Club CO @adclubco [Our NO. 1 sponsor!]
⚡️ Flipside Theatre @flipsidetheatre @superiorimprovco
⚡️ Street Wise Arts @streetwisearts
⚡️ Check Your Blindspots @check_your_blindspots

Our hosts Anna @anna.bolik.96 and Kai @kfranks4404 kicked off the main event with a recap video from our videographer Kevin Steele @kevsteele and a harp performance by Serena Hunnicutt @hunniharp to set the mood.

Leah took the stage and metaphorically connected the palm tree to her journey of founding Street Wise from a side hustle playing matchmaker between artists and businesses. She pushed through uncertainty and leaned into her community roots to plant the seeds of Boulder’s first street art exhibition, grow that momentum into a mural arts festival, and bloom Street Wise into a full-blown non-profit in 2020 - completing 180 murals to date 🌴

Lio’s connection to palms was an unexpected sensory experience. His family from the Congo reminded him that every part of the palm participates in life. He took us through a meditation that connected the physical resilience of the palm to the livelihood of his ancestors and then ended the morning by sharing funny Yoruba folklore about the dark side of wishing to be as useful as a palm 🌴

Thank you to our community, partners, sponsors, and our amazing organizers and volunteers for making events like these possible: @creativemorning @adobe @adclubco @boulderartsculture @cubrandstudios

Our upcoming August birthday event (Our chapter turns 1!) for #cmNAKHLAH will have TWO speakers: Leah Brenner Clack @tinytrunx , founder of @streetwisearts and local artist Lio Bumba @liobumba !

Leah is the Founder and Executive Director of Street Wise Arts, a Boulder based nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to uplift artists and to build vibrant, resilient communities through public art, creative events, and multi-generational education programs that not only beautify spaces but amplify cultural and social themes.

Her work in the arts sprung from passion and drive - from curating galleries with friends, running maker-centric retail spaces and creating art activations in Boulder and Denver. One of the main reasons Leah was called to this work was to find better ways to support artists and to use art as a way to create connections.

Building a platform from the ground up with no road map was exciting and risky, but incredibly rewarding. Seeing artists thrive, gain new opportunities, and have their work in public spaces has been worth every challenge.

One of those artists is Lio-Bravo Bumbakini, an alumni of UC Boulder and an artist who paints in swaths of folkloric imagery and vibrant, abstracted, storytelling.

His work spans across paintings, drawings, large-scale murals, photography, short film, mixed media and performative installations - speaking to the clashes of cultural and individual identities and drawing heavily on idea of biophilia- humanity’s innate connection to nature.

Stop by @junkyardsocialclub on Friday, August 21st from 8-10am to celebrate our FIRST birthday! Hear Leah and Lio’s talk “Art of Resilience” and make sure to leave your mark by contributing to Lio’s “Stay Wild” community mural!

We were all winners last Friday at our July #cmcompetencia event with Sarah Wallock @whereswallock at @yellowbarn.farm 🥇

Under the shade of the barn, we kicked off the morning with breakfast from @moxiebreadco and @ozocoffeeroasters and enticing displays from @pointeofbalancewellness books and @amioceramics creations while Logan Proffitt @lopro360 set the stage with his original music.

Inside the beautifully restored barn, co-hosts Anna @anna.bolik.96 and Danielle @beswelle got us rolling and introduced 30-second pitches:
+ Sam Nelson for his upcoming fashion show @check_your_blindspots
+ Azuraye Wycoff for our amazing venue @yellowbarn.farm
+ Danielle for our chapter merch + her design businesses @neuen.co @afterneuen.co

After the pitches, Sarah took to the stage to walk us through her travels across the world and her journey to reluctantly realizing while she is, in fact, a competitive person, it’s always more fulfilling to win when everyone can sit at the top together.

When a rare brain tumor forced her to slow down and reflect, she realized just how hard she’d been pushing herself and turned her reflections on the intersections of health, family, and travel into a memoir that helped her plot a path to ‘free’ that she could only have ever given herself.

Thank you to our community, partners, sponsors, and our amazing organizers and volunteers for making events like these possible: @creativemorning @adobe @adclubco @boulderartsculture @cubrandstudios

SAVE THE DATE: Our Chapter is TURNING ONE! Stay for details about our birthday celebration on August 21st!

Our July speaker for #cmCOMPETENCIA is Sarah Wallock @whereswallock 🥇

Sarah is an outdoor and adventure storyteller, author, dancer and community facilitator. Spending time outdoors as a kid gave her a love for travel that has catapulted her across six continents and 19 countries, deepening her understanding of travel as more than just movement, but as perspective.

Fueled by her unstoppable passion for exploration, she shares insights and her love for the outdoors on her popular personal blog, Where’s Wallock, intentionally seeking out the kind of experiences that require you to pay closer attention to how you move through the world. But it hasn’t been all travel and co-founding hip hop dance crews.

At 25, she had her first seizure and uncovered a rare brain tumor. While process of discovering and removing the tumor she named “Twisty” brought her adventuring to a temporary halt, the recovery inspired her to write about her shifting identity in ‘Chasing a Feeling: Charting a Path of Adventure as the Only Living Daughter’.

After years abroad, Sarah finally settled into Boulder a few years ago, close enough to the airport to keep the door to international destinations open while staying grounded in the kind of landscapes inspired her to go abroad in the first place.

Join us for her story of resilience in the face of life’s unknowns and how your greatest competition is often your own perspective on Friday, July 24th from 8-10am at a NEW LOCATION: Yellow Barn Farm @yellowbarn.farm

Since this location is less central than usual, we encourage folks to come together and carpool where you can! More details coming soon!
