We are excited to announce the new home for the Integrative Clinic of Minnesota (ICM). In partnership with the The Oshun Center for Intercultural Healing and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, the new ICM will begin services this summer trimester at the Family Tree Clinic Tree Clinic.

The new ICM will continue to offer upper-level Acupuncture, Chiropractic, and Massage Therapy NWHSU students and University of Minnesota first year medical students the opportunity to work together within a close-knit community providing integrative care in a welcoming and supportive environment.

For over 50 years, Family Tree Clinic has been providing high-quality and affordable reproductive health care that is affirming, individualized, and respectful of all people. In 2022, the Oshun Center for Intercultural Healing opened their doors inside the Family Tree Clinic’s Integrative Health Wing offering holistic therapies based on traditional cultural healing done in communities of color, including craniosacral and myofascial bodywork, Maya abdominal massage, energy work, birth and lactation support among many other healing arts. The Oshun Center is a space for interracial community building, cross-cultural learning and appreciation.

Special thanks to Michele Rene, Michelle Norton Fleming, Ihotu Ali, Spring Saldana, Marley Schaberg, Matt Thronson and Chris Smoley for their work on finding the new location for the ICM!

The Heartwood Institute was established in 2005 to
create a place
where we can come together
And remind ourselves
what is possible.

Close your eyes
and see a world
that we can design
in the brightest colors
that fill our mind.

Thank you for the trust and support you have placed in us.

May the new year bring prosperity, love and blessings to all of you.

Gotta lotta headaches?…A little work on your falx is just the ticket.

The Falx is a membrane that divides the right and left brain. It can become tight and this restricts the movement of the bones of the head.

CranioSacral uses several moves to release the falx, which restores optimal cerebral spinal flow throughout the brain.

The book “The Way Out: a revolutionary, scientifically proven approach to healing chronic pain” by Alan Gordon is a good resource for learning more about how to work with neuroplastic pain —previously known as the kind chronic pain where the body has healed, but the nervous system doesn’t understand that.

CranioSacral therapy can provide your brain with what Gordon calls “corrective experiences”. Add those up in your day and your brain will start reacting to regular sensory input in a normal way, rather than interpreting normal sensory signals as danger signals, which then the brain interprets as pain.

We offer CranioSacral l three times a year: in April, October and January. Join us and get started!

The movement of the cerebrospinal fluid, the movement of the fascial sheaths sliding across each other, the movement of the joints, the movement of the organs sliding around each other with the movement of the breath, the movement of the bones of the head moving in relationship to the production and absorption of the cerebral spinal fluid— all these movements can be nurtured by cranio sacral therapy.

In this reel, the song came first. What could capture the solidity of this woman’s joy? I have listened to her over and over and I am uplifted e very time. I hope you are too.

We know that movement is the elixir of life. There are many ways to bring more movement into your life, including craniosacral therapy.

Try this at home!

Level one: 2-person donkey lean.

Level two: 3- person donkey lean

Super advanced donkey lean: do a two person donkey lean and then together, try to walk while doing it (not pictured! We have not tried it yet, but donkeys do it)
Fritz Smith, MD, DO created zero balancing. He uses the donkey lean concept to teach students about the kind of touch used in zero balancing. You can read more in his book “Inner Bridges”.

In a zero balancing treatment, we access the energy and structure in the body through the skeleton. Well really, the skeleton plus the ligaments.

As we work through the treatment, we work from head to toe, pausing between movements to allow the body to absorb the changes that are happening within.

“Dorsett is a master of zero balancing and a rare human being. As a former peace corps volunteer, she carries a deep humility alongside many years of professional practice and life experience in hospitals and clinics as a physical therapist, zero balancer, teacher and acupuncturist.

She has a profound understanding of anatomy, physiology and energy of the body.

Dorsett creates a classroom where learning is easy and fun for students of all levels.”

Honoring all those whose work came before us today. In the past, this work was passed on individual to individual, family member to family member.

I feel fortunate that I did not have to be born into a particular family to learn this work, or live in a village that happened to have someone I could apprentice to, but rather I could find a place that was teaching it, and go learn.

CranioSacral therapy has gone by many names. This name is just the latest iteration.
